Boot lock will only "catch" using key!!!!

Not sure if this is a common fault, but my boot lock just pushes in as if it were locked, even when the car is unlocked . But when I insert key, twist it, & push, hey presto.
Just a bit anoying when I need to jump out to open tail, need to swith off engine, & take keys with me.
Is there a simple fix or is it a case of replacing rear lock mech. Ta.

Not wanting to sound patronising (but my dad did the same thing in his volvo for 7 years befor I told him!) ........

There are 3 positions for the boot release button:
      1- works with central locking
      2- locked
3- open with key in temporarily

Sure you're leaving the central-locking position?

Failing that, there is also a threaded adjusting bar between the lock and the catch mechanism - you may be able to make some fine tuning to make it work - but from memory everything else behind there is a bit complicated and as said above could require a greasy rebuild.
