    WTF is the solenoid?

Hi, excuse a newbie dumb**s but where can I find the waste gate valve solenoid on a 3B engined S2?

Does it run on 12V and how do I test it off the car?

I think I have a problem but need to check it out.

Do a search for WGFV here - you'll get lots of info.

A 3B should most certainly have on.

With 12V applied to the WGFV you will hear an audible click. In this 'ON' position you have a route from the WG straight thru to the MAF hose.

In the 'OFF' position the WGFV connects an air route from the WG to the turbo output housing.

If someone has removed your WGFV then you'll have running problems...

What is the car doing (or not) ?

On boost under hard accelleration, I'm getting a regular loud mechanical fluttering (almost a clatter) noise which I believed to be a wastegate spring letting boost go. I thought this may be a solenoid failure causing the WG spring to control boost.

Local Audi dealer told me over the phone it doesn't have a solenoid valve which is why I asked.

          Any other ideas though?

BTW can you give me some more clues how to get to the WGFV as I can't easily see it.

          Thanx

That symptom sounds more like your throttle bypass valve has expired. It is the (usually) black object under the WGFV. Try applying vacuum/pressure to the small hose that connects it to the inlet manifold - it should hold either but if not replace it.

Blimey, that was a quick answer, a local guy too!

Thanks, I'll check the throttle bypass valve and report back (if I can ever find the WGFV).

How would that cause the symptom though?

Noticed jameswkr is a Surrey guy - I'm in Croydon BTW

They are both located behind the off side headlamp ( and its easiest to access both by removing this and the air shroud behind it ). Both are relatively inexpensive ( see VAPparts ). There are detailed instructions on the linked web site S2-audi. I am near Weybridge.

Hmm, found the WGFV valve but not the throttle bypass valve (whassit look like?). I need to take the headlight out to check it all out really.

Report back with the info soon but why would throttle bypass valve cause the symptoms?

                    Its underneath the WGFV.

If the diaphragm is ruptured it cannot hold boost or vacuum and it reverberates = the noise you can hear.

You may know it by it's max power name, the dump valve.

Take out the drivers side front light, or take out the airbox and all will become clear.

See this webpage by MikeS2 on how to replace it: http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/tech_articl...ve_replace.htm

Bypass is behind the light on ABY cars but lower at the boost pipe (turbo->ic) on 3B's.

                        Check from underneath the car.

Brilliant! Thanks guys, I'll get it off later.

Just checked and Audi dealer quoted £32 + Mr Brown's pocket money fund

Are we sure that this is the culprit?
If so I'll get it ordered up.

Any way of checking it off the car?
It's a bit difficult getting under the car at full boost on the road.

Does this mean that we are losing boost or overboosting?

Order it from VAG Parts mate!!

Get the S3 replacement part number 06A145710N (it's better than the S2 one) and it will cost £15.41 plus vat plus p&p

Or order that part number from your local Stealer.
