    Yes but how......

    an air line?

    bicycle pump?

    vacuum cleaner?

    suck it?

    blow through it?

hold my arm out in a strong gust of wind?

Sorry, didn't mean to take the P***.

I'm just not sure exactly what to do. If I leave it in place on the car while running will I spot the problem as it only seems to happen at boost on the road at high speed. Can I use an air line to check it or is that too much pressure?

We had the car in bits last night and did the following:

Replaced the bypass (dump) valve with the part no. recommended.
Cleaned the WGFV and checked it was operating correctly
Stripped and rebuilt the wastegate using a new diaphragm
Checked all of the vac tubes

But the car continues to make the same noise on hard accelleration. It seems to have improved a little, but not much.

Anyone got any other ideas as to the cause?

Still, I am learning a lot about these turbo systems!

Check the exhaust downpipe heatshield. It can rattle.

Consider propshaft cv joint/central bearing wear. Can you reproduce the noise at standstill reving the engine ? or only on move

        Engine mounts ?

I'll have a look but it's really starting to irritate me now!

I'm convinced it's related to boost in some way as it only occurs when the turbo is spinning up and you have your foot to the floor. It's a sort of fluttering clattering noise that sound just as I would imagine a spring valve to be if it were flapping. That's why I thought the dump valve or waste gate valve sounded feasible.

The only way I'm gonna get this is if I try and record it I think. No effing way I am gonna work it out alone.

This sounds like the problem on Jon 91 s2 car.
Have you checked your propshaft bearing?
IIRC Martin said when he took his off that the bearings were dry and very poorly - could it be these?

Sarcasm? did I say something sarcastic?
I've just read through the whole thread and can't find anything sarcastic at all.
Sarcasm and malice just ain't me, if I've got something to say, I'll say it!

If I have offended anyone with what looked like sarcasm, my sincere apologies to anyone but I wasn't aware of it. BBS forums often lose something in individual interpretation, perhaps this is what has happened in this case

I'm just trying to work this one out, as I said before, I've never worked on a turbo car before and it is a steep learning curve for me.

The sound recording is on the way, I'll try and get a WAV file up tomorrow sometime.

                Thanx

Well, we have it sorted and it was so simple I could slap meself.

A gasket on the wastegate to manifold bypass connection had blown!

The gasket was keeping sound until larger pressure built up and then let go to a sort of mechanical raspberry blowing session.

Still, it is all sorted now but thanks very much to all that came up with suggestions whilst we were tearing our hair out. God knows we need all we've got.

                  Cheers again chaps.
