    Turbo Question

    Hi ppl,

I'm re-assembling my engine after new head gasket etc..... and last night I was fitting my samco hoses.

I was inspecting the compressor wheel in the turbo, and I can feel the slightest amount of play in it. The car doesn't smoke/have any turbo issues, but I was concerned as afeter re-building the top end, I'd hate to have the turbo go and be put back to square 1. So the questions I have are:

How much play should you be able to feel in the compressor wheel?

What should the compressor wheel feel like if you rotate it by hand?

What would be the consequences of the compressor wheel failing?

Any previous experience would be much appreciated .

it will move a little up and down as i (think) its a floating bearing, the movement to be worried about is backward and forward IIRC.

i think 1mm movement is the most u want before you start worrying

That sounds good, I couldn't feel any movement backwards or forwards, but a slight amount left and right.

That smells right - pity my bearings are knacked to the point that I do feel some longitudional movement. A rebuild beckons someday...
