The fan off with ignition off is correct, thats how it should be, its then up to speed 1 (which is VERY quiet) and the electric after run pump to keep the temps down.

To test the after run pump do this:

Get her hot and switch her off. Undo the expansion tank cap just a little bit to let the pressure out the system. Wait.... when the after run electric pump runs you will see the water level in the expansion tank rise. If the water level doesn't rise, then either the engine wasn't hot enopugh to turn it on, or the cap wasn't loose enough (release the pressure and leave it there) or... something like the pump or switch have actually failed.

The rad fan on speed 1 with the bonnet shut, its very quiet....

Needless to say, opening the expansion tank tank with a hot engine is of course not to be done without the proper precautions!!

Its an easy way to see if the pump is running!

What temp does your speed 3 come on then Martyn ? Mine is still not right - I get no fan until between 3 and 4 marks after 90.

          Pete,
Well, I really don't know if its 3 or 2 yet.... I'll try to find out one day soon. But,... my gauge shows just over 90C when the fan comes in.

You need to get that fan resistor off and check it on speed two, also the wiring to be sure its ok. It looked a little rusty when I looked at it, but then becuase of where it is, I'm not surprised. You really have to check that resistor Pete, and if you haven't already, fit a new voltage regulator for the back of the dash, only a few £.

Your one is either only working on speed 3, or your gauge is lying to you, simple enough ish to figure out, just needs a lot of time spent on her to work out which. Bumper off again....

            Martyn,
I did get a used resistor pack from Sal & put that on there & it's still the same. What's the part number for the dash voltage regulator ? Maybe it is that....

The voltage regulator is 171919803 @ a whopping £5.04+vat from me or £8.14+vat from the dealers if your passing by. Simple enough to fit if you don't have airbags and have a socket big enough to get the steering wheel off?

Where is it on the cluster Martyn ? Do you have to take the Autocheck off the back ?

Nope, you just need a small Phillips screw driver follow the green arrow....

Thanks for that Martyn, i'll have to check that, always thought it weird the fan seems to stop with ignition, when in the past all my Golf's have left it carry on running.

Will check it out, im 99% sure tho that the water pump ive heard humming on other cars and def not heard that on mine.... will see this evening tho.
