    Fitting boost gauge ?

    Hey folks,

My boost gauge has just arrived and I want to do a temporary fitment tonight to check all is OK

I intend to power it from the cigarette lighter socket (temporarily) and had assumed that if I removed the panel above the passenger footwell, I could access the ECU and connect into the vacuum line where it goes into the ECU. That way I don''t have to cut any vacuum lines...just extend the existing one.

Question 1 - Is this the normal place to attached the vacuum line for the boost gauge?

Question 2 - where do most people pick up ignition, +ve and ground when installing for real?

    Cheers n

      Question 1 - Yes.

Question 2 - I took mine from the head unit light feed, so it only lights up when you use your headlights, same as the dash.

        Q1. Yes
Q2. I took my illumination from the aux gauges and the power from the switched live on the head unit. It powers the boost gauge on start up and the lighting is also dim-able with the rest.

Which wire on the aux gauges is the illumination? I need to wire one up to the ISO adapter so i get it onthe head unit.

Hi.. I intend on going something like this myself

could you tell me some detail about your gauge and where you plan to fit?

I got an Autogauge from ebay (picture below) which I chose after seeing BRY's....I think it is very similar to BRY's......It is a fake DEFI at a fraction of the price.

The glass is smoked, so black when no power is applied. It is measured in BAR, which again I wanted as everyone seems to talk about Audi's in BAR not PSI.

As for fitment, I am trying not to put in front of the usual middle airvent, as I want a complete stealth machine. I will temporarily fit it at the left end of the tray under the steering wheel...reasonably hidden, which I can see through the steering wheel.

One idea for a permanent home is to cut the front of the middle airvent, mount the gauge in there, then mount the front of the airvent back on with summut like small magnets, velcro etc. That way, I will only display the gauge when beasting it and not bother when pootling to work, but it will be hidden from casual observer looking through the window.

What I really want is a digital boost gauge mounted somewhere like the front ash tray (as it can be closed) or in the sunroof switch housing, but I think the analogue gauges are easier to read when moving quickly, so dunno

                  Cheers n

I got the idea of a Defi from Sal, but then saw the price!
To do that you would have to cut out the air flap from the centre vent, I think, as a flush mounted one like mine fouls the flap so that it will not open. Positioning it further back will be a right headache.

                      Hi BRY,

Hmmm, I wondered about the depth and the air flap. I had wondered about drilling a hole in the flap for the tubing and using lots of slack, as the hole would be easy to fill if the gauge was removed.

I have been looking at other mounting ideas, including a steering wheel cowling pod (didn't Doug do one recently). What I really need for that would be an 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" gauge so that I could still see all the dash behind, (although it does not then fit my 'stealth' requirement) but I have never seen a boost/vacuum gauge that small...shame

@SKI for now, I have fitted it on the parcel shelf as shown below.

                      Cheers n

Here's where I mounted mine, took the power from the switched radio feed and illumination from the aux gauges. On the back of the inlet manifold there is a perfect take off for a boost gauge, just install a T piece in the vacuum line that is already there and feed the vacuum hose through a bulkhead grommet. You're then taking a readining directly from the inlet manifold. Here's mine:
