You could try soaking your MAF in this Vodka. That would get it clean.

I've got a bottle in my freezer for special occasions. At £60 a bottle it's not quite an everyday drink.

Well, seems it's the Maf that's at fault.

Took his off and stuck in my car, and it's awful, hell ! ! didn't realise how violent overboost protection was Don't like it
Then put mine in his car, cleared his codes and it's flying again. Switched them back quicker than a quick thing from Quicksville

He's off to get some IPA tonight and we'll stick it in a bath of the stuff overnight.
Fingers crossed that that'll do it, if not it'll be a new Bosch Maf

Will let you know how it goes.

I had a shock when I removed my air filter had big bits of plastic from the crash stuck in the ribs on the underside of the filter and even bigger bits rattling around in the airbox Hmmm, maybe I should have checked that before now

I didn't know the maf could cause that. Makes sense though...

Its cheaper to get the pure spirit used for food industry (very clean) and it has about 90% alcohol.
Believe me it is still possible to drink, but in very small quantities.

How do you clean it, just the plug or the inside of the unit?

Clean the plug contacts and connection carefully with a Contact Cleaner/Enhancer.

And to clean the MAF, submerge just the wires (the fine ones seen in the 'tube' part of the maf) in IPA at least overnight. Just dont submerge the whole unit!.

Do this maybe twice a year depending on usage (more if you have a K&N or similar air filter).

And remember to be careful not to put too much strain on the wire as its very fragile, so things like spraying stuff on to it, or swishing it around too hard could cause damage!

Yup, certainly don't touch the wires with anything, including a cotton bud.
Like a knob-head I did this and broke me maf!

Is spraying IPA on it also a danger?

It should be ok if you are careful and spray from a distance, though to be on the safe side its probably best to just soak the wires for as long as possible and gently 'swill' in the IPA.

Well, here's an update on my bro's little saga.
Cleaning the Maf sorted the overboost protection, and no-more fault codes were stored stating that, and also the 00561 - Fuel Mixture Adjustment code disappeared.
                          Roll on the next problem
Intermittant start problem now . Sometimes started, sometimes didn't regardless of being hot or cold. Both a fault code and water down the back of the cam cover confirmed the hall sender had gone t*ts up.
Along with this, the car sometimes wouldn't boost beyond 5 psi but didn't pull up any other codes.
Hall sender ordered from Vagparts and fitted last Saturday and all seems well so far.
Car boosting past 5 psi all the time, so must have been something to do with duff hall sender. Does that compute with you guys? would a duff signal coming from a hall sender limit boost? seems so in this case
Fingers crossed that thats the end of it
