3B is the code for the earlier 220 bhp engine, 89 is a model number, the first Coupe was called 81/85 and the newer Coupe is called 89 and 89q if it's a quattro model.
A salon can also be a type 89, not sure if the avant is availble as type 89.
Other codes used are b2, b3 and b4 which relates to the platform on which the car is build AFAIK. The type 81/85 coupe and 80 are based on the b2 platform, the type 89 coupe, cabriolet and S2 is based on the b3 platform, allthough cabriolets and the S2 use the newer b4 hood and lights.
Have never heard about 4b or ab before, in Audi context anyway.
Hope ive got it all correct, otherwise im sure someone will let me know :-)
The Avants have the colourful title of 8C. There is a 4B yes, but not any to do with our beloved old hacks. The 4B was the bahn storming engine fitted to the 1988>1990 Audi 100's. It was a 4 cylinder 90 hp!!
