    RS2 Conversion

    Hello There

Right to business guys, any help, shouting at, abuse, tips etc will be gratefully recieved (except abuse really).

I have recently purchased a project car - Audi Coupe 2.3 20V Quattro. I have always loved these, it is in good nick other than a few spots on the paint work but for a 15 year old car I was expecting worse.

The engine is in very good nick - just had to change the thermostat, rotor arm and the distributor cap to get it running perfect (looked like they were the original parts they were that stuffed up - even had to dremel cut the rotor arm off)

    The story-

This car will be going to the nurburg ring for a bit of a mates race next year,

competition lines up like this - Scooby - 290 BHP
    - BMW M3 - ??? ( he says - we don't belive him)
    - RX7 - 280 BHP

and a couple of others which I am not worried about - BMW Z4 (standard 3.0i) and a Seat leon Cupra R (225 BHP)

Now I am only running about 160BHP at the wheels according to my gtech pro thingy. I know this is going to have to be seriously upped to keep up and give them a bit of competition.

Questions which I need help with pay attention guys as I am slowly confusing myself.

    1. RS2 engine conversion or S2 engine conversion?
    2. Can I use my block to do either of these?
    3. If yes any idea on parts and where to get them?
    4. If a full engine and gearbox change is req where can I get one all the breakers I have asked say not got any and I have tried a few
    5. What suspension upgrade would be best?
    6. Where can I get an aftermarket RS2 front bumper and lights.
    7. The biggy - Cost?
Any help would be great guys. I mean business and to win on for the Audi Coupe enthusiasts out there over the scooby and M3 boys.

Push me in the right direction guys.

    Cheers

P.S. When it's all done anyone suggest a good respray colour for the whole of the car. It is a dark metallic blue at the mo and I want to brighten it up a bit (just so they can see me disappear in the distance easier).
    Cheers Guys.

First of all to the forum. Quick question, why did you not buy a 3B if this was the route you wanted to take?

Colour.............Why not go for the Sunburst.....................Bright enough for you

      Quite simple,

I couldn't afford an S2 with the 3B and still modify to where i need to be. But just getting the shell with a good engine is a start. I know where I can get the 3B engine and loom etc for approx £1500 and can do all the work myself. A Decent S2 would cost more than triple that and the car I have got only cost 1K.

So now do you see where I am coming from.

Love the colour by the way, Perhaps a bright Red is first on my mind but that orange is creeping closer now I have seen it

      Cheers

I would sell the COupe and buy a 3B S2 mate.

Ask WabtheKing he has done this very conversion and in retrospect wishes he had bought a 3B or stuck a 4.2 lump in the car.

Send him a PM and have a chat.

There has been a couple os S2's gone recently on e-bay for only £2500, I'd sell sell the coupe and keep and eye open for a cheap S2.
In the long run it will be far easier, all you have to do is put some decent brakes on it, and I can recommend someone for that!! , and put a chip in it for 270-280bhp. Job done.

              Hello there wabtheking,

Yep. Looks like I should have bought an S2 according to these guys here. Can see their point.

Don't you think the 2.3 might just give out a little more power?

And If I do a conversion and it all goes pearshaped when at the ring I can just come back change the engine and off we go again till I fix the other!!!!

              Just in case you know!

                Azman,

I'm going to be doing the very same in converting a CQ20v to an S2 spec. It’s easy for people to say just buy an S2 but if you’re able to build your own go for it, you will end up with a car that suits your needs far better. When you think about it Audi didn’t make the S2 in the first place, it was created out of a CQ and the 200 turbo engine so you’re effectively making your own.

Engine aside there is a list of different parts between the CQ20v and the S2 but everything is a bolt on part to convert. Half the list is only cosmetic anyway.

There are of course pros and cons for doing it this way, but as you said it’s much cheaper to build your own.

Engine in the CQ20v is a larger bore and higher compression ratio, 2309cc and 10.3:1 so converting to a turbo setup would require custom pistons or rods or even both so it is cheaper to buy a 2.2 turbo lump complete and bolt it in.

3B engine is a straight forward swap, ABY is a little messier with different accessories and 6 speed box etc.

Finding the bits you need is a real headache I've spent over a year trying to source the parts needed and only just found what i was looking for.

I am in the process of working out every detail for doing a conversion, list of parts needed etc so i'll keep you posted..

                Mark.

                  SUPERLATIVE.

                  Cheers Mark.

Wabtheking has a few nifty sites that will help with this, I have spoken to the audi site in bristol today and they have no engines at the mo but have told me to ring every week to see if they get one in they said about £1500 the lot to me over the phone so looking good.

Anyone know if you can convert the 3B to a six spd box.

I think I am going to need the extra top end spped for the long straight on the ring.

P.S. anyone thinking of doing this is well advised to get a PS2 with GT4 and practice like hell on the ring.

I last went 2yrs ago in a TVR Grifith 5.0l running approx 500BHP. That was fun but very very very hairy. Lots of practice is needed just so you get to know the track.

P.S.S. If anyone would like to join me for the bash please let me know and I will contact you with details closer to the time. Also you could help me stand on the rest of the lads and really show them up.

                  Cheers Guys

                    Help,

Just noticed that the fuel pump is audible at any speed. Just a droning / grinding noise really strange never had that on any of my cars. Is this normal?

I'm doing 6 speed box also, you need...

Prop Shaft (shorter on 6 speed)
Half shafts, or front drive shafts (again shorter on 6 speed)
Gear Linkage, (very different on 6 speed)
Front subframe (or add spacers to gearbox mounts)

Flywheel is damn confusing, all 6 speeds had the large dual mass flywheel, however i know you can fit the box to a 3B clutch and flywheel if you ditch the 8mm spacer between box and engine. Yet to find somebody who has done it to work out the finer details.

Fuel pump is a common issue, might be worth checking the 3B/ABY part number or even the motorsport pump incase the 7A pump is of no use with the turbo engine, silly to have to change it twice.

I know you have made your mind up, but surely it would be easier to buy a cheap S2, (there are some around) and tweak that? You must be bloody good with spanners AND electrics to go for this conversion and have a lot of time and patience.

                        Good luck and

                        Cheers,

No that doesn't sound good. Especially if its loud!!

I was supposed to go to the Nurburgring last month but didn't end up going. You won't need a 6spd box, i think the top gears on the 5 and 6spd box are the same. Had 170+ on the clock out of my 3B and that wasn't maxed out!

When you off to the Nurburg next year??

                          Cheers,

The 6 speed box will fit the 3B, but as Mark says there are quite a few other parts you need to make it fit. 6th gear is the same ratio as 5th on the 5 speed so the top end speed will be about the same with either box. Its just that the 6 speed is a bit stronger.
How much power do you want?
Are you telling your mates about the conversion? Or will they still think you have 160hp when you get to the ring. lol

hi and welcome to the forum i to was going to take this route but when i sat down and worked out the time and cost it just wasnt worth it by the time you pay for custom pistons new shells etc you wont have much change out of 1k think you can use the tdi bottom end to get compression down but then you need to get the 7a head machined for the water manifold the list goes on and on like everyone says by an s2 thats the way im going for now
