No, this isn't a request for water saving tips! Just wondering what you lot think about running a good engine flush through before doing an oil change? I was thinking of using Forte engine flush as it's supposed to be the Bee's knees but I've heard good and bad things about using an engine flush!

If you suspect your oil is very dirty, I've found it best to remove the sump and give it a good clean.
There have been a few documented cases whereby engines were flushed, and oil pressure dissappeared. Often bits of carbonised oil can stick to the engine internals. These I would describe as benign (harmless as long as left alone). Once these carbon deposits are dislodged, they end up not being completely dissolved and end up in the sump. Once the car is fired up, they are sucked up through the oil pick, they jam the strainer and of course, oil pressure drops. Once the car is left switched off for a period of time, the deposits drop back into the sump till the car is started again.
Some cars are unlucky and the oil pump is damaged.
No flush.

i always used to flush my audi 80 sport with parafin( put about 2 litres and run the engine for about 10 mins) in fact for 5 years and the engine was perfect no problems at all with oil pressure or anything else . but i wouldn't do it to a turbo car incase some of it stays in the oil cooler .
@ Volcano: Your engine must have been very clean and well looked after. It's dirty engines with carbonised oil deposits that can cause problems once they are dislodged.

I've used one in mine in the past. Though like the Forte one, they have always been the small bottles that you add to the old oil, not the ones that you replace the old oil with before refilling with new oil.
If your worried about using one but still want to try, then just use a flush every second, third or more oil change.
Or better yet, just change the oil more often, maybe every 1000 miles a few times with a cheaper, good detergent oil to clean the engine internally.
If the engine has been run on a quality synthetic oil that has been changed regulary, it should really stay nice and clean internally and shouldn't really need flushing.
I change the oil every 3000 miles, or rather when the colour of the oil changes to a noticeably darker shade (but not Guiness coloured!).
That is when the detergents have basically done their job and the oil is becoming contaminated.
