IIRC it was piston 5 that melted? and rod 1 has now spun the bearings?

It does sound like you have an oil feed problem - bad oil feed could have caused both problems - the block was cleaned properly after the rebore?

do you think someone maybe forgot to tighten something properly or forgot to lubricate the bearings prior to assembly ?

I had the same thing happen on my s2 3b no5 rod bearing completly gone half of no4 no3 burnt but tree and 4 where in good condistion mains were not to bad but at the time the engine had done 170000 miles but very well looked after. On stripping the engine all other parts seemed to show very little ware concidering the millage so we could;nt put the failure down to general ware and tear, however we did find that the oil return valve on the oil pump was stuck open hense no oil preasure so we think this may have been the cause but not sure what made the valve stick its a spring loaded metal piston and it would only take a small pease of metel to make it stick, please let me no if you find out the reason for your problems .
