oil level lowered...but why???

Hi everyone.
I noticed today that my oil levels have lowered quite a bit,although i have no white smoke coming out when i drive(hence no oil been burning),i use 10/40 castrol oil(actually the previous owner changed the oil for me and i havent started using them yet,but that is what he always used).

no warning lights have come up yet,and no high temperatures on the gauge either,but im troubled that the oil has gone.There was some indication near the temperature valve of oil leak,but just got the car from the mechanic and he told me it is nothing to worry about.Previous owner had noticed it as well,and he wasnt worried either.

could it be that i should be using some stronger oil rather than 10/40?
i dont want to drive around with a bottle of oil in the car on every journey!!!

my car used to use 10/40 but since changing to Castrol 10/60 it seems to have stopped. don't underestimate the amount of oil which can leak out around the oil pressure or temperature sensors......mine weaped a load before changing - oh and the pressure sensor is in a dog of a location - not a 5 min change!!!

so you think i should change to 10/60 next time i go for an oil change?I hope it solves the problems as well.Which is the best oil recommended??
i just got a 10/40 BP 5000 to carry in the car just in case...
