    MSD ignition

Anybody ever upgraded their 3B ignition with a msd unit? Or similar unit that takes over the oem ignition.

I saw that Audiman was running a 3B with RS2 goodies! Still got the oem system?

    thanks

Yep, your right, stock 3B ignition and no probs, even at 1.8bar. Only time it gave a problem was at 2.0 bar, gave a misfire now and then, so the boost was turned down as these misfires could bend a rod very easily.

Umm, I think that the MSD coil would be a very good upgrade for the OE coil, as that one is indeed a bit weak. We didn't have problems with the OE one with Steve (or maybe we did??? ) but we did indeed with Tom and I guess a stronger coil can only be better.... Food for thought for Habib as well, he's also building a monster engine right now!

Nearly ten years after. Is there any news or everybody took the TFSI coil solution?

i blew up one of the FSI/TFSI style coils on my first dyno attempt for deep 700's. switched back to the latest 1.8T 115r's i had always used, 759/554 and went to the track. and i have never had issue with the standard 115r's either.

the VWKotex fans claim awesomeness with these coils as an upgrade, with the ability to even run upwards of ~.040 gaps as well!

but i bought an Autronic CDI500r and Bosch Motorsports waste spark coil right after that dyno and no longer run the COP's.

                    hope that helps.

My plan is to run RS2 setup on 3B standard distributor ignition. Point is, maybe MSD coil is better (will secure 1.8-1.9 boost) than oem 3B coil? I don't want any missfire trouble

I do have all the parts but haven't been really necessary to install it, I run a complete Rs2 setup on my ice track s2 with 3b engine. Only upgrade I did was magnacore ignition cables and new distributer cap. Shoots 1.7 boost without even a single cut.

Let me know if someone is interested in sw. Power 377 hp 3b with rs2 setup.

I seem to remember Audiman's miss-fires were not down to the coil after all, and were ok with his 480bhp setup. I think he was using 7A leads.
Just make sure everything regarding the ignition system is in good condition, and you have the correct distributor rotor. The distributor is not as bad as some make out.
