    noisey power steering pump?

    Can anybody help???
started the car this morning to find i had an unusual noise coming from under the bonnet.
Had a listen with the old "screw driver to ear method" and found its from the power/steering pump.the fluid level is good.its a nocking noise which dissapears when the engine warms up....
any ideas????? and if needed, where to recomend geeting anouther one?
    best wishes james

      Hi James,

Standard feature of a whole heap of Audi's!! got it on mine too for the SECOND time!! They all seem to get noisy when pretty well used ie 100,000+

      See you at Castle Coombe,

I swapped mine also at about 200 dkm.
Put a magnet in the reservoir. See if it picks up the grinding metal chips.
Do this before you put a new pump in.

Most of the noise in the pumps comes from the 2 thrust washers which control end float in the shaft. Other than that there isnt much in them to create noise, old dirty fluid could cause the vanes to stick in the pump, very low oil would cause airation. I did a write up on the overhaul proceedure with piccies of what is inside HERE and this should save you about £300, as AFAIK the S2 one is different with the s2 not having servo assistance off the inlet vacume, but full hydraulic assistance, run from the piston pump within the PAS pump, charging the bomb.

the problem is the brand new part is too expensive so everyone jsut gets theirs reconditioned. mine makes a lot of noise, i did as this forum suggested. I got a lound system installed and a performance exhaust but it still overpowers them!!!

One day i will bite the bullet and pay £300 for a new one!!
