    engine rebuild costs

    Hi all,

I am collecting all my bits and parts for my conversion. I already bought some parts but I am not busy yet with rebuilding my engine, I hope to start within a month. My goal will be around 420 hp. I still cant decide if I want to buy upgraded rods or use the standard 3b ones. Ofcourse the bearings and the headgasket will be replaced by rs2 ones.

But what will the extra costs be for replacing the rods , everything has to be rebalanced, right? How much will these costs be.Rods will be around 800-1000 euro.

    thanks,

    Erik

Depends upon the delivery of the power you require. Low down torque bends the rods, top end power may not.
If you are rebuilding for power then rods would be on my shopping list.

      Thanks Bry,

I know the rods bend when you exceed 600nm, I think I will be on that limit. The problem is what will the costs be except from buying new rods. Balancing etc.

Yeah I know Bry, but then I wanted to ask Mihnea to tune it to be on the limits. Chipped rs2's also have around 600nm.

RS2 setups have bent rods IIRC.
You stated that you wanted to run on the limit, that is what and where you will be!
Life on the edge - it's your desicion, but it wouldn't be my choice!

Yep I know thats why I am over thinking it again. But I just want to know what other expenses do I have except from buying rods? Its not just changing the rods, I think you also have to balance etc.

Yes it's a one-off cost though, and you can save weight, which will make the engine last longer. Then you will have room to up the power if you want to

                  I'll definetly second that...

Look at what happened to that guy in Istanbul with his RS2. 2 Broken engines within 300km of driving

most if not all uprated rods are balanced . besides engine balance dosn't cost that much anyway.

I dont think the rods will hold anything near 600 nm. I thought max power on the OEM rods was 420 hp / 450 NM

I bent 3 rods with the RS2 turbo. If you want big power or lots of low down torque, you will need to replace the OE rods. It's false economy to try and make do with the OE setup, one boost spike could end in I was close to 600nm when mine let go...

550Nm is about as much abuse as the stock rods will take. Steve is right to err on the side of caution with this - it is possible to get that sort of torque from a good RS2 upgrade... so strengthened rods are good insurance !

I think what he is getting at here, is if he gets new rods, what else would he need to do as a consequence of this..... re-balancing the rotating parts being one of them etc.

okee guys, you convinced me to spend antoher ???? euro . Will get my self some rods and a company that can balance the engine (I believe Jeffer knows a good place). And ofcourse a larger turbo , I dont have to watch the 550 - 600 nm anymore. Probably the 3b ignition will also be wise to replace. The rs2 injectors are also not up to that task anymore, so I have t sell these .
