    Rod bolts stretch?

I'm planning to put my motor back together next month. I have Arrow connecting rods. My question is how many people when assembling their rads measure the bolt stretch apposed to just torque to a desired setting? How important is it. Should I buy a stretch gauge?

    Thanx

I couldn't find anyone who would check the bolt stretch for me. Most of the machine shops I asked thought it was strange to be doing it

Just ensure you tighten and loosen them a number of times to polish the bolt's threads, this should help to provide an accurate torque reading. The other important factor is the lube you use. As for torque value on my rods, I think it was 55ft/lbs. (but I'd have to check to be sure)

I dont think rod bolts stretch at all. They are tough mofo's. IIRC if you haven't over tightened them you can use them as much as you want. But Do some research at machine shops. They can tell you exactly.

So a 0.001mm incramented 0-150mm Micrometer will do, Put it in, then torque it and take it out to measure the difference from new. Much cheaper than the DTI.

            Thanx guys

The conrods came with literature which states the (ARP) bolts should Torque to *43ft/lbs.

*Torque setting shown as a guide only and are NOT a substitute for accurate stretch measurement.

I think I will purchase a stretch gauge. Both Summit Racing and Jegs have them for a decent price. Though I would rather not purchase an extra specialty tool
