    oilcatchtank

    Can somebody confirm ?

    Why:Engine performance should be better ?
    How: let the hot gasses out with the help of a small tank and filter ?
    How to hooke up ? Does somebody has an example (drawing/sketch) ?

    Should it be like this ?
    motor (sump) --->tank---->filter (ambient)
    tank---->air inlet

    Engine performance is not better. The air entering the engine is no more polluted with oil residue.

    Do a search on the forum, there are loads of threads how to hook up a catchtank.

      Actually the engine should perform better, though gains have never been quantified. Gains due to two main reasons -

      1. Air is cleaner without oil mist pollutants which can increase chances of knock
      2. Air is cooler without the hot oil mist - colder air always gives more power

      As for hooking one up - do a search on the forum. Pretty sure I have some drawings posted here before or on s2central.net !

        It can make a bloody mess in your engine bay though!

            True! Same here, when I forget to empty it. It'll empty itself all over in the engine bay.

              I thought the catch tank has a valve setup which allows the caught oil to seep back into the sump. I repaired a punctured one for my ex-bosses brother who built a track car out of an M3. He dumped the body, made a new body out of alloy tubing and fitted the M3 running gear into it. It weighed about 700 ish kilos.
              If you really wanted power gains go for the dry sump method as a significant percentage of power is lost as the crank passes from air into oil. Not sure on the figures but IIRC it is up to 25%. But as with all good ideas they all need one essential thing to make them work-----Money

                What is your oppinion related to the quality of the oil that was turned to vapour and after to liquid...?

                I always thougth that filter leave some dirty in the oil too.

                  Perhaps I am making a sweeping generalisation, but whenever I have seen cars with modified breather setups they always seem to be covered in a layer of grimey oil...

                  I stand to be correct though.

                  Cheers,

                      Same here, I found that the filter on top of the tank became really clogged with sludge after a while and hardly breathed at all contradicting the point of having a catch tank/breather system in place, so I launched the small pancake filter and vented straight through a hose under the inner wing.

                      I still get a smell of fumes occasionally, but no where near what I did with the filter stuck on top of the catch/puke tank. Also drains to the sump, helping keep the engine bay free of grime.

                          Guys,

                          I heard a couple of things:

                          1) It should be a tank with features to trap the oil ( to prevent the oil coming out the filter)
                          2) the inlet should be in the middle of the tank
                          3) the outlet (filter or not) on top
                          4) don't use a filter but just an open hose because it becomes clogged.
                          What do you mean with wing ?
                          5) On the bottom the return to sump.
                          With a valve setup of course ??

                          So the gadget on the photo is not good enough (69 euro incl filter)

                          Can you confirm ?

                          regards,

                          Ronald

                            i think you rely on gravity to pull the oil to the bottom of the tank and into the sump and vapours to escape from top . i'm i right ?
