having tried pretty much everything to get to the bottom of my idle problems I though I would give it one more go. I tried disconnecting the ISV and lo and behold the car idled - albeit a little high at 900 rpm.
Does anyone know the ramifications of running the car with this disconnected? I have tried another ISV previoulsy and the problem persisted.

If by "ramifications" you mean harm to the engine, I do not believe so. However having driven my S2 with it disconnected, the car was unpleasant to drive - jerky and hesitant off/near idle . Try removing the ISV and give it a good clean ( there are lots of threads on this ). Lube with the mineral oil from the PS system.

I know what you mean, mine is a little like that now you come to mention it but it is a whole lot better than the stalling!
I actually have tried swapping the ISV with another one which I know to be working but it had the same result. previously I have had problems with diverter valves leaking air but this time it is rough even with the diverter valve taken out of the loop.

have you cleaned the throttle body potensiometer?if ISV is ok then that could be a problem.give it a good cleaning
Actually changed it for a new one!!

I'm problem with RS2 idle too. Tried cleaning, another isv and checked TPS, No cure.
Problem is that sometimes it works fine and idle starts around 1500 rpm and slowly degrades to arounr 900. Usually it drops to 5-600 before it humps up and gets stabilazed, sometimes it drops dead and somtimes keeps humping bit longer...

could it be a MAF problem?or a temperature sensor problem?
I mean the MAF could be reading the air flow wrongly and have problems with the idle.Have you pulled any codes?
checked the TPS and the switch is activated on closed throttle.
The MAF has been swapped out with another one from a working car (that idles ok!).
Put a new temp sensor in but no change.
I have run all of the checks on all sensors, including altitude sensor etc.
