Having just brought an S2 a fortnight ago, the performance seems a bit different from my last car (Audi A4 avant sport quattro with 190 bhp) it doesn't seem to push me back in my seat.....is this what to expect??....all the gauges read Ok (oil pressure, water temparature etc..)
Hi Mike
Is your car un-modified? What age/version is it do you know? How many miles has it done?
I would say, even in stock trim, you should feel a decent surge as the turbo comes on to full boost around the mid-rpm numbers, especially in 2nd and 3rd gears. Are you getting smooth acceleration in all gears on full throttle all the way to the red line? Can you hear any strange whistling or air-whooshing noises when on full throttle? Are you using high-octane petrol - performance is noticably poorer on cooking normal unleaded in my experience.
Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...

Hope someone can shed some light on this....

Oooo, sounds strange,
I am no expert, but there is an A4 QSport which lives near me and I have only ever seen it as a shrinking dot in my rear view mirror so I am surprised you think that there is no difference A mate as a 225BHP TT, which does the same shrinking trick as the A4
I would therefore suggest that you: -
1. Pull the codes
2. Do a boost leak check or meassure boost pressure in all gears
3. Check the throttle is fully open when the pedal is down
4. Post the results on here and the experts will tell you what is wrong
Cheers n

95 ABY S2 Coupe - Ragusa Green Subtle mods here and there
2011 A5 3.0 TDi - Lava Grey With every option available (except a towball)
Danb - the car is a 1995 83k ABY genuine miles standard..just started using super unleaded but it must be me as I expect the power lower down!!!...no unusual sounds apart from the front wishbone "knocking"!!!...post on the froum to get some info!!!
HPmurit - what codes do you mean (sorry for being thick!!)
the pressure is between 4-5 bar
I'll check the car again tomorro for throttle response
Must be out of sorts The S2 should leave the A4 for dead. Pull the fault codes and see what's up. A boost meter would help too, or a boost test kit to see if you have a leak or two...

Mike,
The codes on the S2 can be extracted from the ECU by the use of a system called VAG-COM and a laptop or by the installation and use of a dash light. (See s2central for details)
I am confused with the 4 - 5 bar pressure?
The boost pressure for a stock ABY should be around 2.1 - 2.2 Bar. (17 - 18 psi?) If i remember correctly?
4 - 5 bar sounds very very high?
One of the most common causes for performance problems on S2's is leaking boost. Pressure check the entire boost side of the intake system. If this is not reasonably possible manually check all the pipes and connections clips etc. Dont forget the conection between the intercooler and the crossmember pipe above it! Remember to check the small vac pipes too.
First things first check the codes!
Money is everything! Second to Power of course!!! But money breeds power??
Sorry for the confusion..the only pressure figures are for the oil!!!.....I have no way of checking boost pressure....
The problem I have is, as I'm new to the S2, I don't know of anyone in the area who could check the codes...(I'm in Nottingham) apart from main dealers and I ain't giving them my hard earned cash!!!...anybody got any garages in the east midlands they would recommend for the job???....
I'll keep you posted to how I get on....but keep the advice coming..
Mike
When i first got my s2 i was a little dissapointed with the performance to be honest. I was expecting a surge the same as u. One thing though is the build quality these cars i think dim's down the surge. Next time u boot it look at the speedo and u will notice the real power and speed of the s2.
3'' Longlife Exhaust, Koni Adjustables, H&R Springs, Full RS2 Setup with Mr Nugents RS2 Chips (just need the RS2 Airbox)
Maybe I am wrong? But I have always known 1 Bar to be equivalent to about 14.7 psi.
We are currently subject to aprox 1 bar pressure NOW (at sea level)
So 1.2 bar boost pressure x 14.7psi = 17.64 psi? (BOOST)
But add your 1.2 bar boost to the 1.0 bar of atmospheric is 2.2 bar?
Check out the URS4 they have a digital boost pressure gauage that reads around 2.2 on full chat? or 1 bar with the igniton on and the engine not running?
