I'm fitting an aluminium flywheel to my WR (amongst other things ) and will be wanting to lighten my crank, any ideas of cost?

A damn fine read - everyone should buy it - just a pity you have to work in old money all the time. Those americans just cannot shake the imperial units - makes me laugh.

I must admit to weighing it on bathroom scales, so thats an approximate kilo

My experience is shown that standart AEL crank with 95.5 mm stroke turning 9500 revs without any problems.
It is more depends on the turbine and cams rather than from ligthen crank especially for city driving

9500 with 95.5 give a h**l of a piston speed What type of pistons&rods are you using?

          Cheers,

before you start to calculate piston speeds, its the actual speeds that matters not avegare speed. and take a look R32 engine in new VW's it has got 95.9 stroke and redline is over 7000rpm and its stock engine from factory.

First evolution of engine was AEL crank, Golf GTi 159mm rods and modifed pistons from 7A engine. Resource of that engine was not complience, near 50.000 km
Second evolution was built by Pisobiker`s guide: AEL crank, custom 155.8 mm rods, custom pistons 82.5 mm. Pistons are such as original ADU pistons but bore is 82.5 mm. Pistons and rods are produced by russian motorsport engeneering company.
This engine is built for race only such as VLN on Nürburgring. Race revs are limited on 7800 rpm, qualifications revs are 9700.

                Any pictures of the project?
7800 is more "safe" in the long run, but i bet it sounds nice at 9700

Pictures without comments are not interested. But all comment were made by Pisobiker and had his copyright.

Additional pictures will be after our start in VLN 2006.

Stock oil pump is not adapted to so high rpm such as 9700 rpms. Oil begin to heat up very fast. Temp is reached 170 C and high in during one qualification lap on 3 km long circuit. We even are afraid will think that on longer distance. Now we think about dry sump system.
As a result 7800 rpm are more safe for racing as 9700. But You are right, engine at 9700 rpm is sound such as Cry of one million mad buffalos

1st evolution as i remember had standart valves and 7A cams, strengthened springs, without hyd.

2nd evolution was made by custom cam by Shrick, part number i don`t remember. But cams were the most malicious that we can find and buy. As i remember cams were 272 duration and 11.8 lift, but i can mistake.
Valves is custom made from Shrick preparation more lighten thus stock.
Now, we don`t understand such desicions are best, because we try to find best speed not great power. Tests includes comparisons different turbo with different setups of cams.
This work very long to speak about the best decision and as I already spoke, we search for the best speed, instead of the highest power. Therefore I at all do not know, how many horsepowers our motor gives out. Our goal is 7.30-7.40 min on Nürburgring.

Where you at with that WR Corey? Mine is being put together as I write this, custom inlet manifold, charge and intercoolers etc. Been scratching heads about space to put it all. The ex. manifold and K27/GT3071 turbo are on and look really good. MAF is going to go on the pressure side so I can have a front light!

What pics? All pictures for a long time already have been shown here. Nothing new.
Car is S6 sedan. Engine managment is Autronic SMC4. Fuel Pump Aeromotive, injectors are different: 550, 650, 750, cc - all Bosch. Custom big front IC. EM - custom designed such as RS Tuning made on SS 304 steel, IM - AAN with no problem it using, intake pipes and throttle body are 80 mm.
Turbos are garrett from ATP Turbo: GT3071R, GT30R, GT40R.

Gentelman, I am only owner and racer of this car, but not race engineer. ECU setup and enging building are made for me perfect spesialists for this reason I not so interfere with their work. Earlier I tried to be interested in all details, but now we are guided only by indications of telemetry. Therefore at me is not present forces and desires to be interested in all technical details.

Parts are on the way from 034, the list is huge , You have the same ex manifold and turbo that I have. I am sticking with the standard inlet as it allows my intercooler to function better and as yet do not see it limiting hp. I have changed from Luminition to 034 as it seems to be more suited to my needs and it allow me to go distributorless and coil per.
Crank will be off to the machine shop (as well as front pulley, ally flywheel and clutch assembly) for lightening and balancing.
Head will also soon be off on its holiday's also
Removed all the bomb and PAS (never liked the PAS pump's drain on the engine) and am changing to an electric PAS pump and vacuum assist brakes.
