    Titanium Retainers

Bit of a tongue twister that!
Seen an ad for titanium valve retainers.
Apparently made from 6A14V. Half the weight of normal ones. Reduces valve train weight by 8%.
    Any comments on suitability.

i wouldn't use them on a road car . they are made for race cars where engines are regularly stripped and built .

Why would these not be a good idea in a street driven car? Is there more wear on the engine with them? I was also thinking about getting a set of these so that I can run higher rpms.

i think there is more wear on the retainers, steel wears well . race engines are taken apart regularly so any worn components are replaced . if you are willing to take your engine apart regularly then go for them . but i'm sure someone on here who knows there metals well can correct me if i'm wrong.i've enquired about these type of retainers before and i've been told exactly what i'm telling you .

I suspect you are right about this - though I am no metal expert !

I wouldn't like to be the guinea pig on these and I dunno if the increased RPM claims are true. OK it reduces valvetrain weight by 8% - is the math so simple that a linear equation then estimates that it can rev 8% higher ?

Well thats one part of a dozen engine components that will be a bit happier, what about all of the rest of them???

Bit like me lightening something at the bottom end and saying now it can rev 10% higher.... nothing else will like it, but the bottom will be ok!

For what they would cost and the "gains" that you would get, I personally would spend my money elsewhere on the engine.

Anything Titanium is generally very expensive as It's a bitch of a material to machine and not exactly cheap to buy either

In my opinion, not worth doing

Well, I have an extra head that is already ported and polishish with a five angle valve job and I plan to add solid lifters, oversized valves, different cams, stiffer valve springs, ect. but don't want it to be an engine that needs rebuilding very often, at least 50K miles at a time. The titanium retainers are only $200 and that seems like a good price. Still would like to hear from someone with experiance or at least some knowledge of metal before I say no on them. Thanks

To be honest its really not a cheap material to buy eather. I can work on titanium stuff but its harder on your wallet then machining it

But i really don`t see the problem with titanium retainers.
Titanium offers you something like half the weight of ordinary steel ones and its strenght is the same as ordinairy quallity steels.

For instance it has more strenght then steel 1020, and offers you a great fatigue strengt because of the flex in the material.
You could also use AL 7075 wich offers you more strengt actually, but isnt that great in flexness fatigue strengt isnt that good.

All in all titanium looks like a durable and good material for me to use as a retainer.

I`m also planning on doing that in the near future

                    just my 2 cents.

                      Hi!
So is the 6A14V designation correct? I am familar with some of the alloy designations but not titanium.
Obviously somebody has gone to the trouble of manufacturing these, although I guess they are a diversification of VW 16V stuff.
Not a great fan of "buzzing" things myself. However if you are into that it makes sense to incorporate the right stuff into the build.

Well yes, it contains aluminium for welding purposes and Vanadium for strenght.
I personally think that the 6A14V is a good material start with.
