    Leaky p/steering screwplug anyone ???

It's that big one on the front of the engine that has a really big "+" engraved in it.

OK for those who have a leaky screwplug for the p/steering pump here's a really cheap and fast way to repair it ! But first, let me tell you about the different quotes I got for the repair.

First I went to my local "stealer", they said 'You're p/steering pump is leaking and we'll have to change the whole pump if we want to be sure to fully repair the leak... You're looking at a 500-600 Euro repair bill for the part and the labor'

    Uhhhh thanx but no thanx

My trusty mechanic said 'We'll pour in a gasket repair fluid that can be mixed with the p/steering oil, it'll cost you about 30 Euros but I can't guarantee that it will fix it forever...'
Uhhhh OK,I'll get back to you on that to book an appointment...

Then that evening I saw that Tots.de is currently selling quite a few S2/RS2 parts for the moment, so I reckoned I could get the used p/steering pump for hopefully 150 Euros if I was lucky...

Then today I went to see the mechanic that used to work on one of my former cars, a 1981 300 GD 4x4 and I showed him my problem...

'No worries, let me get the tools I need, I think I can cure your problem within 5 mins'

( Oh God, please make this happen, I promise I'll make it up to you )

And whaddya know, he took the screwplug out after loosening and slightly bending the p/steering hardline that runs over it by about 1cm and then he took out the small and damaged o-ring seal that was at fault, he opened his magic box that had every kind of o-ring a mechanic will ever need, he selected one that was the exact same diameter but the section was twice as thick, he put it in, screwed everything back up, degreased and wiped clean the area as best as he could and voila, it was DONE !!!

Cost of repair 5 EUROS !!!

Goes to show that it's who you know that counts in life !!!

    Me so happy now !!!

I have heard of this before - its one of those factoids (along with the right part number) which needs to go into the FAQ section.

I've heard of others just nipping that screw up a little tighter by careful use of a hammer and pin-punch. Naturally that only works if the O-ring is OK.

I've had the same problem a long time ago. I tried fixing it with a proper o-ring. But after a week the pump blew the o-ring out inbetween the plug
Then I installed a new o-ring, same thing after a while. After that I bought a copper ring filed it to match the plug and recessed chamber. Then I heated it red glowing, chucked it in and tightened the hell out of it. That was 4 years ago, and till the day its in there

          Cheers

This part is just on just about all our old tech Audi's and even some newer models! strange thing is it was NEVER listed as fitting our S or any 80 based car, but... as we can all testify, it most certainly does!! :-)

For those that need one, its part number 026 145 541, this gets you one new cross head screw complete with the O ring fitted at a couple of pounds.

good thing to know.Mine as you might have read steering rack that is,was losing fluids and i made the mistake in pouring the wrong fluid in which i replaced the next couple of days.however i had a torn bellows and i was thinking that i had already done lots of damage with the wrong fluids, but fortunatelly i hadnt. It appears that there is a 'T' junction of hoses for the power steering that their rings where loosened and when the wheel was turning,i was loosing fluids from that point. We just stiffened the metal rings and everything checks fine!
