I started to change all my water hoses and found this "thing" to be leaking, it connects to the hose that is connected to the main rad and water manifold, cant seem to figure out what it actually is or what it does, what it connects to and how its connected. any info would be great as it needs replacing.
cheers

sounds expensive..ive read the recent posts about them, i should have guessed what it was coz im sure i saw a small impellor inside when i took off the hoses. do you know how much they are new mark? ive never heard it run and the fan never cuts in when you turn off the ignition after a hot run, must have one of those relays knackered

You will only really hear this with the bonnet up and engine not running. It's quiet and kinda sounds like a fuel pump (if you know what I mean). Price wise you'll have to wait for Martyn and Ben to read this. hth

the plastic on both the afterrun pump and the heater valve ( if the car is so equipped) gets brittle as they age, and unless you replace them before they fail catastrophically...
Based on my 200q 3b experience, you may want to think about replacing them around the 150k mile /200k mark.....
Come to think of it, it seems that the radiators tend to fail around 10-11years, so while you drain the coolant to replace it, you might want to consider replaceing both the valve and the afterrun as "preventative " maintenance. - or carry some small diameter pipe to do a roadside repair ;-)

if i remember correctly, if you turn the key to the last stage before turning over the engine the pump runs for 3-5 secs and you can hear it in the cabin as a short kinda buzz (it is pretty quiet though)

Yes - this is indeed correct...
When I first bought the S2, I assumed it was the fuel pump priming but deep down I knew that had to be wrong on a Motronic system. The noise drove me scatty for months until I discovered the source. Then I was enlightened !
i take it that when buying a new afternun pump it will come with all the new plastic bits?!
And come to think of it, since you may have to drain the coolant anywaym check the small elbow shaped coolant hose on the exhaust side of the head, near the firewall, for leaking...
Sorry - don;t have the part number, but its an overlooked hose, just like the one the radiator side that feeds coolant to the turbo through a hard line....
