Does anyone know why this nut is fitted to the wastegate?
What is this for?

that's an old disputing, Sal.
From a theoretical point of wiew ECU should be able to drive the right amount of boost to the WG to keep boost exactly the way it is setted by the ECU itself (unless the spring is so tight or so stiff that not even the full boost coming from the turbocharger will allow correct opening).
So I belive your boost should be fine (given your ECU hasn't been chipped, though).
Main differences then are:
1) If stiffer or tightened spring: you'll have a quicker turbo spool up (WG stay better shut) and maybe a small increase in peak boost in the "climbing" point, just before WGFV restores to default
2) If stiffer or tightened spring: you'll run a higher "Safety" boost level in Limp Home mode (hight ratio depending on spring stiffness).

It probably means Superchips have had their grubby hands on your car in the past !

My car has had the AMD treatment, and the wastegate certainly doesn't have a dodgy nut on it, just the normal bolt (and a locknut I think).
The wastegate screw isn't wound in, that increases preload but ultimately the spring rate will be overcome by pressure and releases the wastegate. Instead, the spring is stiffer, hence the boost pressure can actually get higher before the wastegate opens.
A lot of the ecu control has also been removed, it shows a fault code but the unit has been made to ignore it, as I understand it. The boost control plug has been disconnected altogether, which may or may not be the case for your car depending on age. I'm lucky enough to be pre 1992 so I don't need a catalysed exhaust, which makes power upgrades a bit easier. I'm running at 300bhp (dynoed) and definitely quicker than stock!Martin Cutting

Hi Keeper of the Kitten and welcome among us!
If your car isn't fitted yet with an RS2 exhaust manifold and injectors, get these from VAG Parts (they have excellent prices!), install a set of RS2 conrod bearings and an RS2 head gasket and then, 360 HP and at least 550Nm of torque will be available, and they'll be fully controlled by the ECU

Hi there Mihnea, thanks for the welcome - much appreciated!
The RS2 upgrades sound good to me! My S2 ECU is already remapped (not chipped) so maybe not ideal for this? I have a larger exhaust setup but only standard manifold as far as I know, mapping was done with it fitted. Not sure about injectors, to be honest I haven't looked...
I'm thinking about more power ...but I need more money first!!! Better brakes would be a good idea too

An ECU (be it from an S2 or from an A3 TDI) can't be remapped without being "chipped" as all the data that has to be modified so you get more horsepower is contained inside a chip. The S2 ECU has 2 chips: one for the fuel injection and spark advance and knock control management and another one for boost control duties.
If your ECU really has the stock chips inside, then I don't know how your car has 300 HP and especially how you didn't break it yet....
Though, now that I've read your introduction post, 16 mpg sounds about what an engine that has only had its failsafes suppressed (thus not having been optimized for the setup) would use...
As far as the exhaust goes, try to get an RS2 item as it allows to push the knock limits further than with the stock one.
For the injectors, it's easy: green tops for the RS2 ones and black tops for the stock ones...

Sounds like a superchip mod to me, they relied on wastegate working fine with larger spring and un plug the WGFV!! That really is 'super'.
Go the RS2 route, you wont regret it. If money is tight, there are always bits on Ebay. As for brakes, they are worth spending as much as you can afford on them. But if running about 360bhp then you will need something fairly large, check the brakes section, loads of info there.
The wastegate spring in mine is like a small susp. spring. Its a two man job to bolt the wastegate lid on!!
Nice and stiff, oh suits you sir.
Oh, and welcome to the board "Keeper of the Kitten"

Hi folks!
Thanks for the extra advice. I got the car from a VW electronics guy, he insisted it was a remap not a chipped ECU, but hey I'm learning more all the time!
As for 16mpg, that's more to do with my right foot and country roads I reckon - I always got far worse mpg from my cars than the next guy?!!
I'll check out those injectors when I get Kitty home! I'd say they're probably stock but I'll let you guys know when I see them again.
Money is def tight but I can bide my time!
Thanks for the welcome Audiman, looks like I'll know who to ask for stiffness then!!!

I'd say the guy has no clue then....Originally posted by Keeper of The Kitten

Well, okay but a car running 300 HP on an RS2 turbo can't do 16mpg unless the fuel map is stock in the ECU, which means the guy who did the remap (and chip swap) also has no clue what he's doing... sounds a bit like supershits to me anyway...As for 16mpg, that's more to do with my right foot and country roads I reckon - I always got far worse mpg from my cars than the next guy?!!
