Eeek! Steam from engine bay, coolant disappearing!!

Having just done a run to Bedford and getting caught in traffic, I park and to my horror I've a jet of steam coming out the front grill!
Checked my expansion tank and its looking empty - thankfully I carry water on board since my last coolant leak (TCP pump changed).

I managed to take a look today and I think the steam is coming from the 034 121 187 Water Collector where it appears to join with a hose situated behind the water pump. Having looked at the ETKA picture - which doesnt show the hose attaching to it so I'm confused as to what part exactly it is. Theres also a coolant residue gone crusty around the area.

Greg had a pic of his engine in the garage (during the rebuild) in a previous thread showing the TCP, but the bit I'm after wasn't quite in shot.. got any more shots Greg ?

Assuming it it the part I think it is, do I need to take off the inlet manifold somehow to get it changed as there sure isnt enought room for me to change it?!

    Cheers,
    Nick R

    HI Nick,

Sorry to hear of your problems mate. There are plenty of pictures of all the water cooling circuit from when I did all mine a while back. Have a look here: http://www.vagparts.com/S2/rad.htm you might see the part on the 4 pages of stuff I did.

I bet the hose that has split is one of the two short ones under the water inlet manfiold! there are two, one feeds water to the turbo and the other takes water from the stat to the heater circuit.

Both hoses can be seen in this picture:

I bet it's one of those two! not nice to change either. Best way I think is to undo the PS pump and move it ouot the way. Undo the deflector that the PS fluid cooler goes through and you should just have enough room to get to both hoses.

The hose form the stat housing is 034 121 063C @£3.94+vat and the turbo feed coolant hose is N 020 2621 @ £13+vat a metre, although you only need about 6 inch of it!

There are fun to change!! if you do change these, then you might as well do the stat as well as it will be easy to get to at the same time!!

Also check the condition of the top rad hose where it joins the water manifold. It ALWAYS spilts right by the manifold!!

        Aha!
You were right on the money with the second link to the photo MartynF. I'm fairly sure it must be the upper turbo one.
I think changing it is outside of my abilty/patience scale and unfortunately I haven't got the kind of tools and environment at my disposal either.
Typical that its gonna be a few quid for the parts and a shitload for the labour!! I have an Audi dealership that does my work within a few hundred meters of where I work so it'll most likely need to goto them,

As for the thermostat, what are they likely to cost ?

        Thanks for the help,

:-) as always, part a few quid, labour, a few hundred... it's not that bad to do, a couple of hours me thinks just to do those. The stat is about 13, not much. If you need a good garage to do the work, you could also try Autopool in Iver. Not far from you and they know thir S2's very well!

          Cheers Nick!

Steam from the grill on mine turned out to be the small hose between the water manifold and the block. The pipe is about half inch bore and 3 inches long. Took about 2 hours to change...rad out without air con condenser. Pig of a job but I decided to fo it this way rather than take the bumper off. Not sure it was a good idea becasue it took about 20 minutes to ease the rad out after it was unbolted. Agree with Martyn on the top hose to manifold...just where my second leak was a few days later. Luckily this was a quick change as the jubolee clip was in the right orientation.

looks like you found the pic you needed. Its definetly easier to get the aux rad off if you take the bumper off, can get to the bolts on the bottom far easier then. Only takes about 1/2 to do that part of it.

Resurecting a very old thread, can anyone tell me what diameter the two short hoses for water manifold and temp sensor are? It looks like the pipe on mine is on its way out so I want tog get some pipe to replace them both and get it done.

At my 3B... the upper small hose wich goes to turbo is 10mm inside diameter, the lower one wich goes from the block to the other water manifold and then to the heater matrix and auxiliary pump is 22mm inside diam.
                  Hope this helps!
                  Regards!

Thanks, I have some heater hose at home ready so will find some time to get that done in the next couple of weeks.
