My car had a little fender bender, and while it was getting worked on (paint and such...mainly waiting for parts) I decided to do all the basic mait. to get the car up to spec. The first thing I noticed was the my cam gear pulley was a little cracked. Not broken, but a couple hairline cracks. After talking to a few of my Audi mechanic friends they said they had all seen that before on both the 10v and 20v. Bought the new pulley, timing belt, all v-belts, waterpump, t-stat, rollers, plugs, wires, the whole 9 yards. As I started to dismantle the timing belt I noticed that Audi spec BTDC and my BTDC were different...I had no hesitation like hitting valves or anything...turned over as spec. I marked everything, replaced everything, and reinstalled. Tensioned the TB, torqued down all my bolts, and turned it over by hand. Same feeling as before, so I just figured that my engine had been 'tweaked' before, and someone didn't put it back together correctly (Mind you it ran perfect before the fender bender) . Went to go start it, and of course it wouldn't start. Fuel, spark (although weak), no evident problems...no start. I first went over my starting system, expecting there to be a fault there...none evident although a bad engine ground wire which I changed to get a full spark. Again, nothing. As this baffles me, my friend suggested that the engine did sound like it was turning over rather easy...i.e. no compression. Get out my compression tester, hook it up, and get 19, 21, 23, 20, 22. My eyes light up. We go down to his 944 Turbo to test it to make sure it was my car and not the pressure tester and of course we got 135 on the cylinder we tested.
My only thought is that the truck that my car ran into hit the mini-radiator, which ever so slightly made it hit the cam gear...in turn my engine skipped pretty good bending a ton of valves. I haven't pulled the head yet to really see, but it is pretty obvious. I didn't drive my car from the accident, and this was the first time I started it since. I just figured in all the noise, squeeling, yelling at myself in the accident that it happened without me knowing. The engine did cut off when the car stopped rather quickly, but I figured it was because I was still in gear and it stalled (not much to remember).
Anyone have a set of used or new valves they would like to sell me? Cheapest I can find is $23/valve and I have to wait about 2 weeks for them.
