what is on that pulley thats under the pipe? my a/c packed up in the summer could that be a cause or symptom of the noise, i cant remember when the noise started but it was probably about that time..

My Friend also has an annoying rattle in the same sort of area as you describe on his Avant.
        We suspected the A/C unit.

If its not AC i would guess the idler pulley/bearing for tensioning the timing belt. My 7A had a noisy one which sounded like a high pitched squeak, wasn’t a constant noise, seemed to come and go and was worse at idle.

Water pumps can get noisy too, especially if the timing belt is too tight. Sounds like a youdling chicken.

is there an easy way to test to see if it is the a/c pump / clutch ? if i can eliminate possible causes it would be helpful.

remove the A/C Belt and see whether the noise is still there after.

something of similar nature.Could a worn out PAS belt be the cause of excessive power steering noise when the car is stationary?Or is this the indication of a near death PAS pump?

Let me note that when the car is more than 1500rpm the noise is gone.It only happens when car is stationary and on 800rpm.

cheers and sorry for the highjack!

Yes, if your a/c has packed up, just cut the belt off, otherwise you'll need to remove the PAS belt first in order to get a/c belt off.

As Martin said, you can access it but i think its the inner most belt of the 3, so a annoying to get in to.

I have just replaced all 3 belts as they were contaminated with hydraulic oil. Now it's silent. For the PAS/brake pump it said in book that I needed a 12.5x992 belt. That was way too short. Mine actually needed a 12.5x1025 (QBB) belt.
