    White Smoke on Cold Start

    Hi everyone.

Since a while I get some white smoke on cold start, then everything settles perfect once the car is hot.

Last couple of days the problem has gone bigger (much more smoke)

Car behaves perfectly, no ill sounds, tickover when cold is ok also and the car iddles fine.

I am suspecting something wrong with the CAT.

    Any other ideas?

    Cheers

I was having the same symptoms after a top end rebuild, thought it was the head gasket failing as there was some oil in the top of the header tank too and I was losing water somewhere.

Turns out to be the radiator, it's up at QRSport now.

Can you give me more information.
Because I have noticed like some water is coming out of the exhaust when cold start.
No oil marks anywhere in the engine though.

      Cheers.

Water coming out of the tail pipe from a cold engine is normal - you will see it dripping from just about every car in the morning.

This is simply the water vapour in the exhaust gases (produced as a by-product of hydrocarbon combustion) condensing on the cold exhaust pipe. After a while, the tail pipe heats to the point where no more water vapour condenses and the exhaust stops dripping.

This is why the rear sections of exhausts on cars which only do short journeys always rust more quickly than those of sales reps who drive long journeys, as there is always water in the pipes.

          Cheers n

I can't mate. All I've been told is that there's a tiny leak in the radiator but everything else seems ok. Not sure how that would cause excess white smoke from the exhaust though.

I have noticed the join between the flexi-pipe and the CAT is not fully sealed. When cold some exhaust gas exits before CAT then when is hot there is nothing in between. Could it be excesive moist getting inside the exhaust, so providing more white smoke than usual?

              Thanks in advance

is it white smoke or is it steam, Rafael?
white smoke at start-up would indicate a possible issue with the valve seals.
steam/vapor at start-up would be normal.

                  good luck!

If the smoke comes out instantly after startup, is probably from valve seals. If you start the engine and after 15-20 seconds starts to smoke, is from the turbo. I had same problem and after changing the turbo no smoke at all.
                      Hope that helps!
                      Good luck!
