    Oil Cooler installation JIC details

    Im gonna be fitting a large oil cooler in place of the aux rad. Just need to know a few details such as;
what fittings are on the oil pump that go the original cooler?
What size did you go for?
and who made the pipes up?

I do have a local hydraulics company that could make pipes but just needed some more info from the ever helpful giunea pig mark

    Tom,
its a Mocal and it's 235mm wide and 147 mm high with 19 rows, these measurements refer to the finned matrix portion of the cooler with the built in brackets and the threaded unions the overall size is larger.

I had wanted to fit the 25 row cooler in place of the aux rad but it was too tight with no room (it gets too close to the belts) so I settled for the 19 row (its still rated for a 5 litre engine) The problem is that the JIC hose ends take a fair bit of space up themselves.
Maybe there are other makes of oil cooler that will fit better in the larger sizes, and some of the Mocal coolers in the 115mm width but much longer will fit better placed sideways, particularly the 44 row size but these are mental money :eek2: and they did'nt have any in stock when I bought mine(luckily for my bank balance ).
The Mocal coolers come with BSP and JIC male connections or NPTF and Metric female connections, mine came with -10 JIC male connections. If you decide to make up the hoses yourself (it is so easy) these are the parts I used from Speedflow .

    4 x 90 degree -10 hose ends, P# 103-10

    2 x -10 to M18 x 1.5 adaptors (to the oil filter housing), P# 734-10

2 x Dowty sealing washers (for the adaptors), P# 513-M18

2 metres of Stainless steel braided 100 series hose, P# 100-10

The fittings cost more than the cooler:eek2: and are for the configuration that I have used. Expensive but it has to be done right.

Remember we were talking last weekend (@ Lee, too) and I said that I was'nt sure that oil was getting around the cooler OK, cos the cooler and outlet pipe were'nt that hot, well that was probably cos I always checked after a run. Today after sitting in traffic and the motor and oil getting well hot the cooler matrix and the outlet hose were very hot. What may have been happening, was when I was checking it before, after long runs the cooler was getting the oil temps down and the OEM oil thermostat (which I did'nt know was in there, thanks Steve ) was probably closing.

Thats a long winded way of saying I think it's a good place to mount the cooler .

    Here's a couple of pictures.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Why are you guys bothering with bigger coolers? I dont really have any issued with oil temp? I dont think? maybe 100 degrees @ the max? Is it cos i dont thrash it hard enough or is cos you guys (Mark) are developing lots of BHP?

Forgot to say, if you mount the cooler up there, it's probably a good idea to prime it with oil when installing it.

          Mark.

P.S. I got the idea for putting it place of the aux rad from PhilS2R's 'I saw that' post in the non members section.

            Glen,

take it for a blast around Castle Combe (or any other track for that matter), you'll change you mind :eek2: .

Of course if you don't ever track it, your right, there's probably no need.

              Ah! ok thanks Mark!
I belive there is an optimum temp for the oil to kept at? Cos cooling too much is nt allowing the oil to work to its best ability? Someone did mention an oil thermostat? Where is this and what temp is it set to?

Think the stat is set to 87 degs. Its located inside the oil pump housing! Around castle combe i was getting temps up to about 130-135 degs. Way too high! Had to change the oil after that as it had made the oil very thin and the tappets started to rattle!!!

Glen, I was getting my oil temps upto 130 ish at one point when we were mapping the car - just blasting up and down a motorway - at one point we had to stop on the hard shoulder because it was getting too hot !

umm! well i can see the point now! if the stat is set @ 87 degrees like the coolant one then that must be the optimum temp for the oil! and now with my RS2 turbo i find the oil temp does rise much easier that before! so yeh! helivly modded and a good thrashing a good oil cooler is a must really! thanks guys!

I think if i just fit a new standard cooler then mine would be better!! cos it was rustin so now its full of a waxoyle type spray! which also means that not only has it less working fins abut the remaining ones are clogged up!!!

                              Glen,

you can have it mate, let me try and find it and I'll see what kind of condition it's in, it's no 'spring chicken', it's done 120K. But your welcome to it, I'll post a pic of it and let me know if you want it and I'll post it to you.
