    Oil leakage!

    hi all

My car is leaking oil, I thought it was the rocker gasket at first but it isn't leaking as much as i thought.

I have found that there is oil everywhere on the right side of the engine. Does anyone know what the problem could be. I have attached a pic which shows the problem. Could it be the black round thinge, it seems to have lots of oil on it and around it or could it be the long thinge below and left of the picture as this too has oil on it.

Sorry not the most technical person when it comes to cars.

    Thanks

Is the oil coming from the engine block or away from the block (like from a hose or something) If dribbling down the block then could be oil switch thinge (sensor screwed into block with rubber sleeve). The round black thinge could be a culprit as it looks like one of oil breather/filter jobs, (can get clogged). My suggestion is to give the block and surrounding area a clean with gunk and you may get a better idea where the oil coming from

The firetrap item is located down there somewhere, i have seen pics of them being totally clogged up and they are cheap to replace, whether or not that would cause that leak tho im not sure.

Is it possible to get a clearer pic from maybe a bit further out as i cant think from memory what else is located down there that may cause issue.

Is it def Oil, not any other kind of fluid, PAS Fluid for example.

i'm pretty sure that thats coming from one of or both the oil pressure switches down there as mine looks the same... BTW they are a pain in the a*se to get at too, I've replaced the larger of the two but it's still coming out of the smaller (i think low pressure) swtich.

It could also I guess be that that firetrap is broken as those things can get really gunked up. Its not the metallic part, I think thats the turbo coolant pump which runs on after the enigne is switched off, you should be able to feel the coolant pipe vibrate when its on or if you are lucky and you have everything off when you start the car, if you turn the key to just full electrics, it should buzz for about 5 secs.

I'd clean everything up and see where it starts appearing from again - should help

I have checked and it is definately oil, and it doesn't seem to be leaking from the engine it self.

I think i will give the engine a good clean to see if I can spot where the oil is coming from.

          Cheers all. Ian

Smell the oil....is it motor oil or pentosin from the hydraulic hoses? It could be oil from the crankcase breather, but that should only occur if there is blockage in the hoses...

Looks like your breather pipe has split, particularly the larger diameter one which connects that black thingie (PCV valve) to the block. Mine was exactly like that, it had totally disintegrated so all the breather fumes/oil mist were being chucked everywhere.
Remove as much stuff as you can and inspect all the pipes. Change the PCV valve whilst your there, they are pretty cheap anyway.
The long thingie on the left is the coolant after run pump so it won't be that.

Yeah i will give the pipes a good check, Do you know where i can buy this PCV value?

Is it a standard part on all coupe models?

                Thank

Vagparts can sort you out with one, you'll probably need to renew the breather pipes too.
PCV valve is only used on the S2 and urs4/6 i think.

looks like mine too.i needed two breathers at about 120 dabs for both.they'd turn to mush with the oil vapour.
