probably sacrelidge but i'll ask anyway!!!

ok, i had a rough day at work yesterday so instead of going home, i went to a buddy's and had a few pints during the course of the evening we started talking about turboed 4cyl vw engines (he's built a few) and how i'm not going to be starting my turbo jag v12 project this year (no place for a 3rd car)

long story short..... anyone put a VAG 4cyl engine in a B3 quattro? i have all the big things mapped in my head already except how to mount the starter. in vw transverse applications the starter hangs off the transaxle in front of the engine, the audi starter hangs off the block at what would correspond to the rear of the engine if turned transversly.

in 1/2hr of thought, it has become apparent i could have all the parts i need for roughly $1200....... would be silly not to (and then the slippery boost slope begins!!)

    thanks for any help folks

Which 4cyl? The old 16v with a turbo added on or the new 1.8t engines? In europe there was a lot of Audi 80's with 4cyl all mounted the same way as the 5cyl.

i can get 2.0L aba engines for 400.....

i'm beginning to hear that 1.8t block castings are different to the older vw 4cyls tho....

the 4cyl motors in the 80s, were those fwd or quattro?

it makes no difference if they could get a 5 cylinder under the bonnet then 4 cylinder was easier .but yes audi 80 quattro did use 5 cylinder in the early eighties and in the face lift model 90 quattro had the 5 cylinder and 80 had 4 cylinder quattro and non quattro . hope it makes sense

My understanding is that the late B4 90 Cabrio was sold in europe with the 1.8t...
There are also plenty of postings at www.motorgeek.com about putting a 1.8t into a B3/B4 chassis
