    S2 AYB on 190k?

Have seen and hopefully will be goin to view an s2 (ABY) M Reg on 190k Its had a top end rebuild at 150k and all the problems (clutch, seats, exhaust) are things I will be uprating anyway. At first I would be looking todo the basics and get maybe 280bhp outta her, but in the future would like todo the rs2 conversion for 350bhp+. Is this a bad idea on a bottom end that will have done near 200k by the time I get round to 350bhp? Also is the gearbox likely to be aproaching the end of its life?

My other choice would be a 100k car for £2500-£3000 more, but would barely be able to do anything to it. And with the 190k choice would have some money in reserve if I did get problems.

    What you guys think

When was the clutch changed as this is a £1000 job in itself so false economy to buy it for a lower price only to have to do this again.

Who was the top end rebuilt by?

Dunno, i reckon you might spend the same amount if money fixing problems that you would save on the initial price of the car.

Maybe a more indepth check would be needed on it?

Where you going for your clutch change jamo.. the dealers?

I think you can budget a 10-hr job, @ £45/hr, plus parts. About £600 for a clutch job in these cars... best to get something that'll be reliable till you get the upgrade done, and do it all together. eg, my clutch will be replaced when the engine is out for a bit of a rebuild + head gasket job; at which time my upgraded parts will be fitted. It's good economy to get say 3x 10-hr jobs done that can all be done together in say 16hrs... I'm sure you catch my drift. I'm just saying plan ahead with the project.

        Cheers

ABY has slave and master cylinders that you should replace as well, Fat Audi 80's cost £1200 IIRC

S2Ant how much was your clutch change?

Should the slave + master cylinders always be replaced? lol, looks like I should add to the shopping list. I can assume this is true for the 3B as well?

Audiman told me to add "about another 15 minutes" to do the clutch change. That's a fag-break (that's with the engine out too i'm afraid)

I personally wouldn't do the RS2 conversion on a car with that sort of mileage as you will be putting much more stress on components that are already in a very worn state.

Mileage isn't an issue, condition is, if you want to upgrade then make sure everything is in good condition, my S6 (similar engine to the ABY) had 205k miles on the clock when I replaced the head gasket for the later metal item (not that there was anything wrong with the original paper one) and the bores of the block still had the honing marks present. I would happily upgrade now I know the condition of the bottom end.
Although we are now doing the clutch as the release bearing has gone south (upgrading will show up weak points sooner) and yes at the very least when you do a clutch replace the slave cylinder as they are a PITA to do with everything installed.

decided for peace of mind I'm going to hold on for a slightly lower mileage one (thats been loved)

If I knew these engines abit better I might take the plunge, but i am just am amateur... for now

A lower mileage doesnt necesarilly mean its been loved.
Took the head off mine to fit metal head gasket also at 200k, no signs of wear at all. Been running RS2 bits since then with no problems.
Im sure there are a few RS2's running around with that sort of mileage and they have been running with that sort of power all their lives.
Whichever you choose im sure you wont have any problems.

Agreed. My last Rs2 had 155k when I bought it, had 178k when I sold it on. The guy who now has it informed me it is about 196k
