    Fuel pump - how loud?

I've got the carpets out of the boot and the seats down to allow air to circulate and the boot to dry out (yup, more leaky rear lights) and while the car is running I can now here a whirring sound.

I guess it's the fuel pump, and guess I've not heard it before because the rear seats do a good job at blocking the sound. (That and the Guns 'n' Roses which is normally on )

How loud should the fuel pump be? Or is it something else back there which I can hear whirring away?

    Thanks

    Ck.

I had a loud fuel pump - so spoke with an Audi dealer and they quoted about £180 for a new one. the guy was quite honest and said they often carry on for a few years while making a noise and then will just give up.

I tracked a second hand one down on ebay for a fraction of the price and used the info on this site to replace it. the replacement was silent - as they should be. If you dont know how long its been making a noise, you should look to change it in the near future.

            Thanks all

Sounds likes it's time to put the spare fuel pump (from the last group buy) in the boot just in case, but not take any immediate action.
