    Engine rebuild

    Hi chaps,

Im going to start a new thread so I can keep a track of things.

I need to start from the basics, and really need your help on this.

Its come to the stage where my s2 needs more power. with 200k on the clock I cant really add power to it so i need a rebuild. Ive already taken care of brakes clutch and handling.

Please PLEASE stop me and correct me if Im getting anything wrong here...

Im aiming at an engine that can handle 500hp (not saying it will have 500hp, but i want a build that can handle it)... what do i need to replace?

Rods (hopeful take advantage of this group buy)
7a cams (where do i get some new ones from? expensive?)
    bearings (what sort of bearings?)
    what else??? Pistons??

Forget about fuel pumps and injectors for now, just conecntrating on the rebuild, power will come at a later stage.

I want to get a list together so I know how much the parts will cost me, I would love it if this list also incluced where to buy from.

Please help me get an idea of the cost

BAsed on others experiences, at 500 HP level you could keep your original pistons if you do not have to bore to oversize because of cylinder wall wear. New rods yes, rs2 bearings. Valves:Some people say you don't need to change them, but a 3 angle regrind might help, or some porting. Oversize cylinders can be had, 034efi sells some, there are others. You should consider to drop compression a little, can be done if new pistons are ordered, reshaping of combustion chamber or by using a thicker head gaske (also available at 034 EFI). A 7A exhaust cam will help you reach your goals, intake cam also an option, how necessary this really is has been discussed many places.

ARP bolts for crank and head is also an extra insuranse. So is balancing of all moving parts.

Greg : Is it recommended to go for second hand internal parts? I would trust new stuff more I think. How much are new 7a cams?

S4 Turbo : id rather get new pistons and valves. as with the rest of the stuff you mentioned, its all pretty new to me and hard to understand

Ski, If you do need to re-bore your block then just make sure you go for top quality oversize pistons. I personally would use Mahle pistons if I was doing a rebuild for serious power.
As for the bearings, just remember that there is no such thing as RS2 bearings, they are just the same as S2 bearings and many other models in the Audi range

What are the bearings called? "engine bearings" ? get em from vagparts?

Do you think I need to re-bore my block? expensive job? anyone done this in the UK ?

                  Sooo many questions...

It may be prudent to save your pennies and then go for rebuild and upgrades all at same time. This will save some money on remapping as this would have to be redone each time you build (or make changes to) your engine.
                    Just my twopence worth
                    Cheers

Chris : Yes im trying to buy all bits now, then fit all at once

Rob : thats what im expecting, but I want a exact figure

SS : sounds good, think I will go with the new cams option for that extra peice of mind.

Volcano : For sake of £200 might be better getting new ones and do the job right?

THANX to all for your feedback and keep em coming

worth re-boreing? any good companys in UK ? is it really nessesery ?
