A quick tip... DO NOT put a deadline / schedule on this one

It won't happen!! I hoped to get things sorted with my 3B by the end of May. So far, i don't have much in the way of parts Just keep looking, reading + collecting, and finally after adding plents of extra bits and blowing your budget massively, you'll hopefully be ready to fit it all!!

I'm looking to have my big-end bearings and rods uprated, hopefully the block + head are OK, it'll get balanced and then go back together with a metal HG + clutchnet clutch, and be ready for re-fitting

    Prices I'm budgeting on:

Rods £375 (SPM) - ps, drop me a PM if you want in on a group buy, it'll be going ahead for sure.
    Carbonfibre clutch + pressureplate £320
Bearings, HG + all gasktets, bolts etc IRO £300
    Balancing £150-200
    labour ~16hrs IRO £700

And I'm not going ot the extent that you are, that's for sure!! Of course, then there's the remap... better keep saving, and stop buying more parts

    Cheers

@Ross, 16 hours labour for a full high specification engine rebuild to include bottom end and head?
          No way.

it probably takes more than that on head alone

Thanx all, Ive learned so much since this thread started!!!

Ive got a "rough" price now and lots of contacts which can perform this work for me

All thats missing now is the cash and a replacement car for me to drive for a few months

I figured I might be under-estimating a little on that one, but this isn't gonna be a full spec rebuild... and doesn't include the costs of having it balanced. What should I expect to have the hardened bearings fitted, rods changed and a metal head gasket fitted? Standard 3B upgrade, plus rods

Engine will be removed when it's done, so I can get it balanced. Oh, mustn't forget the carbonfibre clutch of course

                Cheers

if you going through all that you might as well balance it .it will only cost you about extra £200 but well worth it

I think minimum realistic labour for a full engine rebuild is 50 - 75 hours (maybe more)
its very labour intensive stripping and inspecting parts...getting stuff reground...measuring tolerances...blueprinting...the list goes on..

I would say £3-£5k myself for a specced engine build
                    could be slightly out tho

That's why I'm not doing the full monty... I know you can always go 'just a little bit further' and my aim is to get the balance right. My understanding is that you can RS2 'spec a 3B engine (ie change bearings + HG) without a full engine rebuild, unless it's a really tired engine; so I plan on this BUT I'll have SPMs fitted and then the engine balanced too... is this unrealistic on a 140K engine that currently runs sweet as?

                      Cheers

20 valve engines are good for a lot more as long as the oil has been changed regularly

                          Yeah...i would go main bearings..SPM conrods.....JE pistons and rings...possible rebore.....++ head gasket
and if there is any other problem areas bearing wise then get them sorted while they are in there rather than build it and damage new parts....

Do it once and do it right .

Take any short cuts and it will allways cost more money and more time of the road. Don,t do it right and the end results may also be disapointing.

When setting the budget, do the jobs that will give you the best value for money. Allways leave a percentage of your bubget in reserve for any unseen problems , anything can happen when removing or installing the engine.
