    Coil pack problem

Right, now that I know that I have a duff coil pack, is there a sure fire way of identifying which one it is?

I've taken them off my car and tried various ways of measuring resistance values etc but with mixed results

    Any suggestions people?

I had same issue. No one could really tell me a guaranteed way of testing, apart from swapping them about. AND, I didnt want to do all that, and have to do it again once another one went pop.

with 190k on my clock i decided it was time to change them all. Im so glad I did it gave me so much more power

The one way to test your Coil packs is:

When you have a problem of ignition.. can be your coil packs... or the POS!
We have 2 POS, one is used for cylinders 1,2 and 3, and the other one to the cylinder 4 and 5.
That's right... Is the same POS, and each POS have 3 channel... but one of them have just 2 channel in use.. the POS that controls the cylinders 4 and 5.

So.. let your motor on... on idle!
      It may have a failure!

Now, you will unplug the fuel injector number 1... the revolutions from the motors is equal?
If yes, than you have a problem on the POS that control the cylinder 1 or the Coil Pack of the first cylinder is duff!
If the revolutions of the engine go down.. so.. this cylinder 1 is OK. Go to the next...

You may do this until you find where is the problem...

After that... you may change the POS!
Make the POS 1, that was used to the cylinders 1,2 and 3.. now it will controll the cylinder 4 and 5... (This change you can make just with the wires).
Than make the other POS, control the cylinder 1,2 and 3.
And turn on the engine! Than repeat the same test!

If the problem is on the same cylinder, than your problem for sure is the Coil Pack from this cylinder...

      If the problem jump
      from cylinder 1 to 4
      from cylinder 2 to 5
or desappear and the problem was at the cylinder 3,
The problem is on the POS 1

      from cylinder 4 to 1
      from cylinder 5 to 2
The problem is on POS 2

You can change the channel at POS just reordering the wires on it!

      Try that!

        Reguards,
Thanks Rafael, however I know that I have a bad coil pack. The POS are both OK as I tried the coil packs from my friends S2 and everything was OK. It is definitely a bad coil pack, the only problem is which one

I suppose what rafael is saying works out to find the coil pack but maybe just by disconnecting one jack plug at a time on the injectors and see if you notice a difference in a sense were it will cut out..if the coil packs that are left after you have taken one off are good they will keep the car running on all four but if they are running on three and half coils it should cut out you, would just have to go through a system of taking them off never tried it but worth a shot maybe

If the coil packs were on the car and the car was running you could unplug (and replug) the fuel injectors one by one. When the injector feeding a working coil pack is unplugged it will make the car run very roughly (i.e. on 3 cylinders, assuming that you are only running on 4 at the moment due to the bad coil pack) and when you unplug the injector to the duff coil pack the nothing will happen.

The problem is that the miss fire is intermittent and only really shows up when the engine is hot. Sometimes it's there when it's idling, sometimes it's not. Having said that I'll give it another go this morning

Ahh I see, I didn't realise it was an intermittent miss fire.

On my car it used to idle fine and drive ok.
but once the boost came in it would missfire like crazy.
I bite the bullet and changed the lot. and i'm glad i did.
Power gain accross the whole rev range improved dramatically
and so did my fuel economy. That's one less thing i will ever have
                            to think about. ever.
Coil pack problem are independent on mileage
                            Good luck.

have you checked the insulation on the wires to the coils ??? They have a bad dentency to crack because of the heat after years of driving. I have that problem on my car so im going to have a friend solder on some new wires on the coils for me.
