Just had the car back after having the geabox reconed, and the top end still rattles even with the thicker oil in it. How do you get at the ballvalve, is it a head off job?

If the valve is playing up this could cause the intermittent rattle that i'm getting.

If this works it could save people a lot of money as the previous owner of mine spent about 900 quid trying to stop this rattle!!!

        Quoted from the thread link

It is located behind one of the two oilpressure switches. If you remove the switch you will see a thread adapter. Remove this and use a flashlight into the canal and you can see the valve. The valve is threaded and you have to use a torx? (12 "tacs") key to take it out. The valve is ~25mm long and ~10mm in diameter.

It's an inexpensive part and should be changed if you take the engine apart.

I thought i'd finish this one with some good news

I sent the Avant over to my mates Garage to have the big ends and mains checked as part of the ongoing top end investigation. They removed the sump and inspected the bearings all of which were perfect.

He then checked the oil pick-up onlt to find that it was blocked almost solid Amongst the contents was a ball of masking tape How the hell did that get there???

Anyway it's all sorted now and sounds fantastic at last.

              Good News

Having never noticed this thread before, I just read it through and noticed your ealier question on boost pressure. What boost are you seeing as 7 - 10 PSI is way too low.

              Cheers n

it's boosting at 16 psi now after a re plumb of the standard boost controller and a Baily recirc valve.

Is that more like it? It pulls hard now

Sounds spot on (except that an S2 boosts in BAR not PSI )

Stock, it should boost to around 1 bar (around 14.5 PSI) under normal acceleration in 3rd gear and above. In 4th gear and above, when booted, it should overboost to 1.15 bar (just under 17 PSI) and then drop back.

Overboost is supposed to last for up to 15 seconds, but I have never found a hill long enough and steep enough to stop me running out of revs

                  Cheers n

                    My gauge only shows PSI

That sounds about right then although I haven't seen 1.15 BAR on overboost yet, better fit the Mark H mod then!

These rattles are indefinately caused by oil starvation so using a thicker oil is not the cure. It's flow that's needed and thinner oils are often the best cure.

                      Cheers
