i posted my thoughts here on this thread rather than start another, thought it was best to try and keep the info on this altogether in one place. It may be that people aren't rushing to buy them because they don't know they exist or where to buy them, i know of quite a few people on the S car list that are using them and have done for quite a while now. Corey is running his with the cover on to see if they do break down under hotter conditions.

Using the 1.8t coilpacks is a tried and tested conversion! There are plenty of people, including myself who have succesfully done this conversion, although I, like many others have done it the hard way by sourcing the parts from scrap yards and making our own looms etc. This is probably why some owners have not gone down this route before. It was a lot of hassle and took many hours to complete my conversion but on the flip side it cost under £150!!! The 034 kits (Apikol do a kit too) have only very recently become available and were a couple of weeks too late for me otherwise I'd have definately bought one! I don't think you can go wrong with these kits and don't forget that the 1.8t coilpacks also have their own amplifiers so you no longer need the troublesome Power Output Stages (POS). I believe the two of these will set you back £150 each before even starting on the original coilpacks. Go figure!!!

        thick

scuse me for being thick, i missed the start of the thread.
are these coil packs a conversion to later ones?
        would they fit my aby?
what came first, the chicken or the egg?
how long is that piece of string?
and other unsolved answers on a postcard please........

Being thick is what we specialise in, go back to the very start of the thread and read through it, look at all the links and read through them.

Oh and just to be boring, with the cover still on they are performing very well still. I may have a look under the cover this weekend but as I am having this weekend off due to all my guys organising my leaving do and a celebration to me going fulltime with "The Venture" I may be a bit so it may wait until Bank Holiday Monday.

But the long term test is still going on.

Jamo I have one with your name on it just waiting here for you

Just reading through the thread with interest as my misfire is becoming more and more frequent now and is causing me much frustration. If i went down the conversion route then that would eliminate two posibilities the POS and the coils am i right? Merlin said the the coils have there own amplifiers so u dont need the POS have i interpreted this right?

ive only skimmed over the basics of this, but dont understand what you hope to achieve from testing new coils. My S2 was 13yrs old and 172k miles when a single coilpack failed, this was after extreme and i do mean extreme abuse thru some lanes on the night in question, along with the previous 13yrs tho of course (great stress release!) After high oil temps and abuse it began to misfire.

When i replaced these all the wiring to them was shot and when i say shot, i mean just trying to remove it from the cover it was crumbling in my hands, so 13yrs of high engine temps and abuse obviously takes its toll, altho even then it still took the coil itself to die.... so what are couple of weeks meant to show?

agree with you ant the coils do last a good few years a few weeks of testing isn't really going to prove anything.

With the coilpack cover on, the 1.8t coils have been known to fry the POS's, i think Corey is trying to see how long they last with the coilpack cover on.

I fryed two of my 1.8t coils within a week of the cover being on, but i think that the coils i had were rejects from GSF
GSF replaced the shagged coils for OE 1.8t coils and no problems since

My point is tho, you saved what... £100 for a part thats actual working life isnt projected to be as good as the OEM fitted on the S2.... we know this thru all the problems that 1.8T's have and by the sheer fact of how common failure is, its common knowledge.... why then buy a marginally cheaper product with a known shorter life and one that is being suggested needs the cam cover left off for them to remain usable?

This was being bended about by the original inspirtation when i replaced mine, for a lil extra i know its good for another 13+yrs, if anything, longer because the wiring was better than what was on my originals.

                    Just my thoughts

I totally agree. If this project is about saving £100, then I will leave this thread here. Or am I missing something?

I am not doing down anyone's work on this, it is actually interesting. just not totally sure of the point.

                      Cheers,

The point is that when the next coil or POS give up you dont have to pay another 100 pounds! The 1,8 parts are far cheaper and everywhere to become!

I think if it holds it is something good! But i would go for the Higher amp system 034 sell!

You need to read up on coil packs and [ower output stages ( POS )

These packs eliminate the [ower output stages which cause no end of problems and are very very expensive to replace!

Anyone care to summise this in 50 words for a lazy git like me? OEM vs 1.8t Coilpacks...

faulty POS channel cause intermittant misfire.

I think you all should ditch your coil packs and fit something called a 'distributor' from the vastly superior 3b engine, they're gonna take the motor industry by storm you'll see.. LMAO
