The simple answer would be to buy Corey's kit! It's plug and play!!

    If you want to do it the hard way like me (this kit wasn't available when I did mine) then look here;

'93 S4 Avant now back on the road complete with new shiny go faster bits.

Or buy the kit drive into the workshop, have a coffee in the corner and by the time the mug is empty drive your car home with a new improved coil conversion fitted.

If I am wearing my asbestos gloves you don't even need to wait for the engine to cool down.

All for 30 mins labour (plus the price of the conversion but without the shipping)

Sounds ideal Corey, but I need to get this cylinder head off first and find where the water is leaking to.

          Bit of an update.

Nothing really other than they are still performing as they should, the cover has remained in place since the coils were fitted and everything is AOK, my fuel consumption has increased slightly (less than 1mpg extra) but I think I can put that down to the fact that my right foot is still where it should be.

            It is a sad day

On Saturday it was hot and the car had done some very short journerys in stop start traffic and parked up in the sun but was working fine and no apparent problems.
Yesterday I started the car and she stumbled, yup!!! we had a coil failiure, checked them all and cylinder number 5 had failed. Put in another one and back to normal.

So I can now safely say that if you are going to fit the 034 coil conversion you either modifiy the coil pack cover to have air vents (which I can supply) or you leave it off altogether.

Or you fit the HO coil conversion and remotely mount the coils away from the heat. and leave the coil cover on.

I will do some trials as to what is going to be the optimum vents needed and still retain the look of the original cover.

Remote mounted sounds like a good idea, keep them away from all the heat of the engine. You could also use the 7A cam cover which looks far better in my opinion ...come to think of it that would be a nice way to convert a 3B to an ABY ecu, remote coils plugged into the existing HT leads, provided the dist can be used instead of the cam sensor. Hows that for a new project Corey...

I couldn't devalue my S2 by doing that

If you were going to go to the trouble of converting 3b to ABY I would seriously suggest using one of 034's standalone ecu's packages.
You could also do away with the dizzy altogether and have the reference sensor on the harmonic damper with a 60-2 timing wheel.
And you would have the power to play with the mapping yourself. As the system is designed to be end user friendly.

                        Explain?

The coils are usually hidden away from sight so that to the untrained eye, the car looks stock.

Corey: It was an interesting exercise that only somebody with a cheap source of coil packs and a "no worries" attitude would have attempted. Thanks for proving my original suggestion that the 1.8t coil packs will die "sooner than later" under the OEM coil pack cover. By my reconning, you started the experiment on May 2nd and it ended with the first failure on July 2nd, i.e. two months.

Too bad. The OEM coil pack cover does look nice. However, <in my opinion> it has no place in a 1.8t coil pack conversion.

It is much better for me to find a problem than a customer asking "does this work?" now I know having tested it myself.
