    Oil temperature while speeding etc..

    Hello,
i was wondering about the oil temperature of the RS2...
Since im only a frequent thrasher and not a constant one,i am used to seeing temperatures of oil no more than 90degrees(if the second line is the 90 indicator). This is my maind indication if i drive casually,if i rarely go into the 4000rpm during an overtake etc.

However if i stay in the 4000rpm department a bit more, the temp gauge indicator begins it's move rising from my 90 deg.mark.

Here is my question..How soon is it supposed to be rising above that level, and where does it stop?I have heard that i shouldn't thrash the car if i reach the 130deg.mark,but is that mark reached soon?If say i want to found my top speed limit and keep the running levels on 5000-6000rpm for a while, where will this oil temp go?

I know this is also depended on oil levels and quality,so i will tell you that im using Castrol 10W60 and oil levels are fine.

When whould i be worried about this indicator? At what temp? Before i had this car,i knew that since my rpm had reds after 6000rpm,i could easily drive in that department for as long as i wanted in 5th gear(or 6th for that matter),if i had open space to drive fast.Is this oil temp a drawback for me now?

    thanks

I see 90 degs regularly in my s6 now the outside air temp has finally crept up to something half decent, on the motorway i would expect it to rise to over 100, if you were using a lot of boost then you would see 130 quite easily especially in the summer months.

my s2 sits at about 90 quite steadily over a long distance at a constant 85-95mph, on a track day it was over 100 using Castrol 10w60.

I guess you might want to check that the ducting to the oil cooler is clear of debris and the fins are clear - is amazing how much cr*p can lurk in there...

Also as Iain said, ambient temp will have an influence on things too

Might be of interest my 7A (has no oil cooler) sitting at 85mph on the motorway will creep upto 100-120 after 15 mins or so, hard driving will push it to 140 but i ususally back off and let it cool a bit then. If i pull off the motorway and stop the temp will be down below 100 degrees within a minute, seems to cool really quickly for a car with no oil cooler.

Interesting you guys seem to get the same range in an S2 with a cooler. Does anybody know if there is a thermostat in the system or does oil flow through the cooler all the time?

140 is very high for normal oil you'll definitely be getting oil degredation at that sort of temperature. I had oil temps that high at the last track day, along with plummeting oil pressures, which was the last time I used the normal synta gold 10-40 oil...

On a normal m-way cruise the oil temp during the summer will be around the 100-ish mark, although it is a little difficult to tell exactly due to the stupid calibration of the gauge! Oil pressure also tells you a thing or two. On the move it should be nice and high, and at idle when warm it should be around the 1.8+ mark.

            Hello,
            thanks for the answers guys,
My oil pressure is as you say Dan,2bar at idle and well high depending on boost. It reaches gladly 5bar now that i use 10W60 and i get very little oil consumption,i guess normal for a 140.000kms car with no real dealings with the engine internals.

I just wanted to make sure about the temps, cause i never had a car with this indication and moreover,it once climbed quite easily on a small chase i had and when i stopped afterwards and let the car rest for a while,it was low on oil,and i thought that pushing the car made that oil consumption. It turns out that i had quite some time since my last oil check and probably i was low before that incident.

On greek hot climate, when i run and boost a bit,i get around 60-70degrees of engine temp, oil temp climbs a little bit on the 90-95deg.mark but i back off,and bar levels are normal.So...that is that i guess!
            thanks!!!!
            cheers

                oil temp gauge

I too have issues with the gauge and calibration. for me the gauge moves very little unless i press on at motorway speeds for a while and boosting quite hard bit even then the gauge barely showed 100.

is it possible that the oil temp sender is lazy after 10 years or so in the car? i know a new sender is quite cheap but do not want to get a new one if that is not the porblem

can anyone coment on the possibility liklihood of a lazy sender

Like all senders they do have a limited life, my s6 on the motorway sits at over 100 degs,

Sorry about this guys, but just need to pick up on the oil pressure subject, is 2 bar at warm idle about normal, because mine sits at 1.2 bar and does have a top end rattle now and again! ( more now than again).

Must admit mine has a tendency to sit just below 90 deg on a cruise even at 95mph, but if I drive the car harder it quickly rises to around the 120 deg mark, never really hit the 130 mark. Oil pressure is always normal (just below 2 at idle when warm and full 5 bar under acceleration. I do have to change the orientation of the oil cooler though as currently it sits sideways so the fins are facing the side of the car not the front.

@Phil that does sound a bit low to me -what oil do you have and when did you last change it? Is the oil level ok, does the car use oil at all?

It's just had an oil service (500 miles ago) and they put oe spec semi-synthetic, it weeps a little around the rocker but doesn't leak and doesn't blow.

My oil temperature rarely rises above 80 and that's after a caning! Either a cracking cooler or a dodgy sender!
