    Racing Billet Crank

An old friend of mine that I have not seen for over 10 years is now working for a while for Swindon Racing Engines.
Apart from building engines they manufacture billet cranks and port the heads by CNC machining.
I have spoken to him today and I have made an appointment to see him tomorrow.

Is there some interest in this forum for Billet cranks and CNC porting?

    Price permitting of course.

If I could get some feed back I can present him with a potential quantity and negotiate a good price for group buy, which I would get anyhow as he works for the sale team.

Aelred, I am sure there will be a lot of interest from this forum, however I think that this is all there will be, just interest. I actually spoke to someone at Swindon Racing Engines a couple of years ago about making some billet cranks, at the time I was given a price of about 2 grand a piece.

CNC porting however, was not talked about at the time so I would be interested to hear how much this would be and what exactly you would get for your money

I have a head that needs cleaned up and ported, would be interested to hear what can be done, pricing etc.

Billet crank sounds a bit too serious for me, i dont think you will get much interest here unless people are building engines for competition use.

As you know I visited them. Very interesting and an eye opener, and their hourly rate is cheaper than most if not all garages and specialist.

I gave them my racing crank so they have a starting point with that, they will give me a price in the next week, I have ask prices for 1, 3 and 5 cranks.
Also you could have any stroke crank.

In respect of the CNC head porting the process is as follows:
They will either hand port a head or a ported head is supplied to them, either will be flow benched and when they have the final result the ports are digitised and values and measuraments are transfered to the CNC machine and hey presto every single head will be the same and so will be each port.
The cost of hand porting an initial head is not finalised as I have not supplied a head to them as yet (will do so at the end of the month).

If any one has a ported head that has not been flow benched we could use this if you are willing to lend to me and I will cover the cost of the flow benching

By the sound of things willl not be any more that any other porting specialist. Then there is the cost of transfering the values to the CNC machine, this cost I am awaiting (This is a one off cost)

If the hand porting took lets say 4 days to complete, the CNC machine will do it lets say in 8 hrs resulting a lower cost for every head ported.

I am going to start using them for some of the machining as thet are cheaper than my regular engine machine shop.

There is no doubt that my friend will be looking after me.

                Will keep you posted.

@ Jamo, I used to use the same person on occasions, now I do most of them myself.
It will be nice to see how good they are after porting and have some before and after figures. If balyboy is willing it will be great.
@ anle Do you mean balancing engines or combustion chamber?

Thanks Raj, As I mentioned I will give them a standard head that I got, and as you kindly offer to help, I will supply yours and mine, have both flow benched and see if yours is good to be digitised and used to take the values.

As I said ther will be no cost to you.

When do you need your head back?

                              Thanks
I am away this week but I should be able to access the forum.
