The pump comes on only after you've turned the ignition OFF and after a period of time which heat soaks the coolant temp up to 110C. It might have done that when you weren't around, i.e. in the house or in the pub after a brisk drive on a summers day.

Depends on whether you would rather replace a 1000 Euro turbo or a 100 Euro after run pump.

    Read this:

I hope you are just slightly confused because the way the switch is supposed to work is it should CLOSE at 100ºC and OPEN at 95ºC. There is power to the switch all the time (not igntion switched) and shorting the two wires together triggers the 324 after-run pump and fan relay.

Euro Car Part number 201440245 is the same as 0-392-020-054 or Bosch 0392 020 039 (VW golf GTI/ audiTT). Basic cost without discount £109.20 but discount codes for 25 or 30% always around.

    Anyone have a cheaper source?

Termal switch: FAE 3581 or FAE 35810, open 100ºC and close 95ºC, I bought mine from here:

    And my pump
mine: Bosch 0392 020 039 (VW golf GTI/ audiTT) seems to be the same as:
    Bosch 0392 020 034 (Saab)
    Bosch 0392 020 024 (VW passat)
    Mercedes Part# 001 835 60 64

I repeat this items are straight fit, plug and play.

The best way to test the afterrun system is to touch the two wires for the water rail sender together.

If the fan and pump start then the system is working.

A properly operating thermostat will keep the coolant at just under 90 C while the engine is running. However, if you have run the car hard and the turbo, etc. are well and truly heated, when you turn the ignition off, the heat stored in the metal of the head, manifolds, etc, will quickly warm the water in the water manifold and trigger the 110 C switch on the water manifold. This typically occurs in the summer. You have driven the car and didn't get a chance to drive slowly for a bit before you shut the engine off. You lock the car and start to walk away. You don't get 3 steps before you hear the after-run rad fan (and pump but the sound is drowned out) come on. With a properly functioning 324 (etc) relay, these stay on for no longer than 10 minutes. If the relay fails closed, it will run the fan and the pump until the battery is completely flat.

The after-run pump (and the related rad-fan) should not come on unless triggered by a temp switch. Here is some after-run pump info (updated with Thuppu's photo and Bosch PN)
