Dont bother touching the wires Dan, the brown staining will not come off.

I know 'cos I thought the same and tried to clean mine up with a cotton bud soaked in IPA.
It didn't even start to remove the staining. Tried again another time, got a bit fustrated and guess what...*ping*. One fooked MAF!

      another few suggestions:

check and reclean flat pins on the maf electrical plug/connector
wipe out the errors in the ecu (you're not gonna lose anything vital if the symptoms are as repeatable as you say)

I tried pulling the engine fuses and waiting for a min or two to clear the ECU but it made no difference...
Good idea on the connections though, I've got some electrical contact cleaner somewhere I'll give that a try.

No offers of roadside assistance yet though?

Don't want to sound like I'm stating the obvious:
but if you are getting a huge sucking/whoosing noise, that would seem to point to air escaping from somewhere rather than a MAF failure. Done a leak test?

I know and it's a fair point, but I don't have a leak/ pressure test kit. I did a visual check and couldn't see anything, but it seems like a bit of a major co-incidence that it occured immediately after "cleaning" the MAF?

I was thinking that maybe what I'm hearing is a huge intake of breath due to the turbo spooling up but that's not accompanied by the usual increase in engine revs and rorty 5-cylinder action? The more I think about it the more I think that I've knadgered the MAF, but I don't have the testing tools to prove it.

VAGCOM, spare MAF and a pressure testing kit all required! Please!

If no-one local to you comes up with a pressure test kit, then I could post you mine for a loan. Not posting my lappy though

                  Dan,
I had this problem when i first got my S2.
One day on the way home from work the car just started to do exactly what you have described above.

I suggest you reset the Ecu.
                  Disconnect the Maf.
                  Then plug fuses back in.
                  Then switch ignition on.
                  Then pull the Blink codes.
                  Note the codes down.
                  Reconnect the Maf
                  Switch on engine
                  Pull codes again.

Check to see if any MAF codes have come up after reconnecting it. (Dont knwo them of the top of my head sorry )

This is exactly what happened to me and it turned out to be fooked MAF.
I can send you my (Broken) one (All wires still intact) If the symptoms are still the same and your still running Limphome mode you know its the MAF.
If for some reason my broken MAF fixes your problem you can give me a tenner for it and keep it

                  Let me know..
God luck anyway, its always a PITA, but it will be all the more fun once its working again

                  Bo.

@Bo - what were your symptoms of a fooked MAF, were they the same as I'm experiencing?

I have been getting a bit of random boost of late even before this incident - I just put it down to the aircon compressor. Hmm, definintely sounds like the MAF is sounding like Prime Suspect right now... If anyone can swing by with their S2 and swap in their MAF for 5mins I would be really grateful.

Tuesday evening no problem as I'm back to work tomorrow so not using the car... I'm on the A316 just a few miles east of the end of the M3 it's easy to find. If that's going to be possible let me know I would be hugely grateful!
