    Unstable tacho reading

Driving along the M45 this morning doing about 90ish (I was running late for a meeting ) and noticed that the tacho needle was moving around between 4000 and 4800 ish, it wasn't wildy moving around more a case of step changes, any thoughts, lose connection, failing sensor, failing tacho. I'd thought I'd seen it before but never had the clear road ahead to watch it for a short period of time

Could be the connections on the rear of the cluster. There are a few pins that connect the sections of the cluster to the rear of the dials. Mine had a bad connection or two that had the needle moving about and occasionally dropping to zero. Took the cluster to bits, cleaned the connectors up and it's been fine since.
