help: RS2 weird sound on low rpm and hard throtle...

    Hello.
Hope someone here could help on finding what that is, or maybe will be that normal?!

I try to describe the situation, if I fail to I will try to record the sound later.

So, I am on a normal village road, going on 3rd gear, 2000rpm. Windows are opened so you can hear exterior sound engine easier.
Nedd to accelerate the car, so have to options:

    1) put 2nd gear on, revs goes up and RS2 acelerates nicely with no weird sounds...

    2) stay on 3rd gear, press the throtle pedal deep and wait for the acceleraion come. At 2000rpm turbo gauge start to read 0.2bar pressure, and I start to hear outsite some "tinkling sound" caming from engine bay (tikle tikle tikle), it fades out nad disapears as the engine come more alive and responsive in order that you need to lift the foot a bit from accelerator.

This "tinkling" only happens when "asking" for throtle/power when the engine is in low rpm (ex: 2000rpm or 1500 rpm), or in that rpm range that RS2 dont have turbo so alive... reminds me the sound on my mother's Opel Corsa 1.4i when she try to acelerate and the engine is staling or asking for a lower gear, except that RS2 desnt shake or stals.

Is this normal on an RS2 or S2? this is not close to staling the engine, the "tinkling" sound is similar... or is 2000rpm and half full throtle considering stalling for this 2.2turbo?

I remind to, that my last to petrol tanks was filled with 95ron petrol, can be that? and the "tinkling" is a kind of knocking sound?...

Can it be the knocking sensors problem?

Spark plugs? (they only have 20.000km on it, and are the correct ones)

This kind of driving i described on situation 2) like driving a diesel engine, is not my normal drive on my "dear" RS2, I usualy only kick throtle for power after reving 3000rpm up. If not I gently accelerate and make a calm ride.
I am just afraid that this "tinkling" on low rpm could be some major/hidden problem...

    thanx

It sounds like "pinking" pre ignition, but that should not be possible with Motronic. Is your car runnning standard software / wastegate / turbo? Has it been modified?

We need to rule that out first.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

The tinkling you describe sounds very much like pinging.

it does NOT sound to me like a problem with your car (read on! for explanation)

Pinging, knocking and detonation describe the problem known as "pre-ignition". That means some of the gas and air mixture is igniting in the cylinder before it's supposed to. And when that extra flame front crashes into the normal flame front (made by the spark plug), you hear a tinkling sort of noise....Pinging!!

Ok. There are various causes of pinging, some meaning serios problems...some not // like engine overheating// incorrect timing// Carbon buildup inside pistons and cylinders// Malfunctioning EGR valve //

      and in your case

      Too Low an Octane Petrol

as high octane has a higher ignition point meaning less chance of pre ignition.

So my advice...drive conservativley for now and DONT test the car like 2,000 RPM up a hill in 4th gear...as this will make it Ping!!

Drive using the lower gears and you should avoid pinging as you reduce load on the engine....

Then ASAP go to a gas station and fill up with Super Unleaded or other quality high octane fuel......

Then drive for a couple of miles and test and see if the noise has gone.....if not ...post back.

RS2's really need to run on 99 RON (super unleaded her in the uK) but I believe can be run on low octane.

I think my rs2 is from stock, got it from first owner, 79000km, now has 104.000km. still have the limiter 262km/h, and my boost reads 1.4bar max... sometimes I saw it reache 1.5 or 1.6 but it back then to 1.4...

now I already tryed to reach the ECU (under the glove box) to check if it was opened and check the version, but cant see how to get it out, or disatach the cables... so I quited.

        thanx for the reply.

          Hi!
          thanx for you reply.
I usualy use BP 100ron petrol, but lately I am using my rs2 on city and thought on using 95 (cheaper) but never will use it again. plus will make a test after filling 3 or 4 tanks of BP 100 again...
I drive conservativley, by coincidence I bumped on that 2000rpm situation and the noise get my attention...
Do you think that adding some octane aditctive will welp on this fuel tank? I thonk I cant add for know more fuel, it is almost filled.

          thanx

I agree, it will be the fuel causing this, mine did the same when i switched to ordinary shell unleaded when i was doing lots of trips up and down the M1, trying to cut down the fuel costs but the car ran like cr*p.

              No problem.
Yes. Adding octane Booster may well help out with this tank...
and then refill with the 100 RON.....

Out of interest. How many miles has your RS2 done??
              and what colour....

Good luck with the octane boosting
