    Overheating

    Hi - help needed again.

On my way home tonight after sitting in traffic for 15 mins my car started to overheat. When I got home water was coming out of the expansion tank!! I let the car cool and realsied the fan wasn't cutting in, so I bridged the connection but the car is still getting too hot.
With the fan pemanently running the car still reaches reaches 3 marks above the 90 mark

Could it be the thermostat, water pump - but the water does seem to be circulating?

Hopefully i'll get it fixed for GTI

    Cheers
    Nick

Is ther any leaks form either Rad???

Is water getting to both rads?? (ie/ are the hoses full and very hot /rads are hot!)

It sounds likely that your thermostat may be sticking.........

Seems your gauge is not faulty ...... or faulty temp sensor//

Might be an idea to flush your coolant system out fully though and run some radiator flush through it (holts is good)....and refill and see where your at.

Best way Ive found in the past is just drop the bottom hose off the main radiator....
Empty the system (be prepared as it comes out..FAST!) and then pour at least 5 or 10 litres of clean water into the expansion tank (hose still off) and pressure will build up and force it (AND ALL THE CRAP) through

Wait till the water coming out looks clean...then hose back on and fill as per instructions with rad flush...

run it for correct time...then flush same way again.

May not help but it is worth a try 100% IMHO

If theres no change I would suggest to haev the thermostat replaced. //awkward but not very difficult job//

Water is getting to the rads - all hoses etc v hot.
I have a thermostat in the garage, so I will start to take everything to bits tomorrow,(after the footy) and flush the system as above.

This may seem a stupid question but is the engine is running when adding the 5 to 10 liters of clean water to force all the crap out?
      Cheers

        NO!
Engine not running when you add the flush water
Car turned off. Lower hose off. Expansion tank lid off. All fluid out.
Pure the 10 pints gradually through the system via expansion tank. wiat till outlet water is clear.
Oh. and Beware if you havent done one before the thermostat is a VERY involved job. WHen i said before it wasnt too tricky I forgot to say you have to dismantle a lot of the car to actually get to it.

Cheers mate sorry if it was a daft question .

I know it is a bit envolved rads out etc... but i have done that before - me and a mate are going to do it tomorrow morning - hang overs permitting.....

The hoses are warm but the water in the expansion tank and rads is cold?
Presumably that means a stuck thermostat...

I've read on the forum that a few people have removed the aux rad - is this advisable?

Sounds like it could well be the thermostat.....

I would not personally remove the aux radiator as Audi put it there for a reason and Ive heard a few on here say the car runs hotter in traffic.....but also a few who are fine with it!

This is a useful how to for the thermostat (+ other stuff)

              Thanks for the advice....

Why are things on your car always simple to fix?
                All set for Gti then

Car runs fine without it, and yes it runs hotter in traffic as the car is standing but all it means is the fan cuts in more often.

I going to replace my aux rad after running with it out but thats my personally preference.

I never see my temp guage below 90 unless on motorway. fans kick in about 95 i think, occasionally see it hit 100 in traffic + heat.
