Am I being too picky here - this is a new water pump from a stealer - one of the teeth has a nick out of it - Should I take it back?

Got to be worth a shot, although they can arrive in far worse states than that and we'd still sell them
At the end of the day, if your not happy with it take it back and ask for another. How long ago did you get it? If it was today ask them to PDR it and get a replacement. More than two days though and it'll be down to how they feel. Play the card that if it fails you'll be looking for a new engine out of them. He who shouts loudest invariably wins.

1994 ABY Avant - it's getting there -
Doug, I personally wouldn't worry about it if it was for my car. The only thing that would concern me would be sharp or protruding edges that could damage the belt in some way. If you're that bothered about it then take it back otherwise get a small hand file out and take off any sharp edges or high spotsS2 Avant......fully loaded   Slipper Wagons Rule !!!!!Comment

As A.P.G. says, should be fine as long as no sharp edges. Take a fine file and reprofile it and it should be ok.
Sometimes it can be worth examining parts before leaving the shop as they can not argue if anything is damaged!!
Hope the head rebuild goes okA6 Avant Tdi 110 because as the fuel prices keep going up I am so happy to be getting 649.8 miles to a tank of diesel!! (£50)

Yeah - I'll just file it - i'm just paranoid about these water pumps - A mate who had a 90 20V had one seize on him, taking the cam belt off - bent a few exhaust valves - nasty. He then had an el-chepo pump fitted that lasted 10K - don't know if the belt was too tight or not.
The pump from Audi UK is £42+vat - but you pay an additional £15 and get that back when you return your old pump.S2,RS2,S4 WB,RS4,S4 B8,RS6 C5,RS6 C6,R8Comment
