Yeah, it's not good for the engine or the cats AFAIK.

How far above maximum is it showing on the dip stick?

I just checked it, it is about 3cm overs the maximum mark.

I'm going to let some oil out not sure how much yet. But the car is smoking bad so it needs to be done.

Thanks guys for the help, I'll get back to you with the results.

Yes if you've overfilled the excess oil vapour goes through the PCV system causing it to smoke like a b*tch!

what an idiot, just checked it and relised I emptied the gearbox oil and have put another 4 litres of oil in the engine.

Can't believe I done it at least I didn't drive it far.

            No wonder it was smoking!

an it causes as much damage havin to much oil as not enough you get so much pressure you blow seals all over the place the crank etc get put under a massive strain with the extra oil.. so yeh drain it out quick.. an its always advisable to put a bit of oil in you filter before fitting allthough i normaly dont bother ,, as long as you remember after a oil change to crank it over a bit before letting it fire in to life .. its a good idea to to make sure you have got the right dipstick in your car my brothers had the wrong one in it and it took us ages to work out what should be in there

But, would that still not go to filling the engine? mine took just 4.5 including the oil filter
and i guess it would be 4.5 if you didnt fill the filter? just my 2p

an i was just going to say that as well.. i spent a long time looking for what oil audi recommend you put in and well all that kept coming up was audi recommend you dont change the oil .. which is bull you have more moving parts in a gearbox than an engine and some parts are actually designed to wear away leaving your oil horrible ..
depending on what box you have to what oil but the best way is to put in the same as what come out was the oil black out of the gearbox an what gearbox do you have and remember the gearbox then needs to be filled up from two points not just one .. you fill up oil in gearbox untill it comes back out the hole ..
i put in mine a mixtures of oils untill i thought the gearbox felt a bit rough cold and nice an smooth warm ,,.but its been a while since i did it about 3 years ago so i carnt really remember but i think you will be very lucky if you have done no damage,,( spent over six years of my life buildng gearboxes its amazing how much you forget when your not doing this stuff every day.. i would imagine someone like corey would be the best to ask..

Get a good quality socket and t-bar on it, together with a long metal tube over the t-bar for some 'horse' power.

Replace the washer on the sump plug when re-fitting. Torque it to 30NM not more, as you can see they tend to tighten somehow over time...

This is a very untried and dont know if any one has tried it, BUT............ Why not angle the rachet so you can lower the jack down slowly thus undoing the bolt? using the wieght of the car for force. If you see what i mean???
