    Hello,

About intercoolers ... Everybody agrees that the bigger is best

A friend of mine told me that a Mercedes Sprinter intercooler could be used on a ABY S2 ...

Anyone ever tried ? Anu testimonial ? Any idea how to fit it (assuming the RS2 traverse won't do the trick)

    Thank you

With intercoolers bigger is better as long as you have a bigger turbo. Yes you would see lower intake temps but you would see some lag as the larger intercooler will have a larger volume thus it will take longer to reach the same presure with the smaller turbo. Just my thoughts...

Not strictly true. The S2 crossmember is different to the RS2 one, so you have to modify it to mate up to the RS2 intercooler, or you simply swap the entire crossmember. Unfortunately the second option is rather expensive!

Not quite true, the bigger the intercooler, the larger the pressure drop on the compressed air.

The trick is to find a balance between intercooler efficiency / size and pressure drop in the system.

Yeah they go quite well, both my mum & dad both own 115 Vito's

My dads has the brabus kit & lowering springs, uprated ARB's and a superchip. Goes pretty well but the electronics wont let him get the back end out on the roundabouts.

i would like to also ask a question regarding the RS2 intercooler.

How can i be sure that it performs well after 10+years of use?Besides the Mark Halligan Mod,is there a way to check for leaks from the intercooler, perhaps after a small rock,or chip had hit it while driving...?If so,can it be repaired cheaply but also with a good guarantee that it will hold,or that is the time for a new intercooler?

Finally, has anyone ever made a custom intercooler that would fit the original mounts and hoses?Im trying to keep the Samcos i preciously payed for while taking the step for a better intercooler.A thicker one perhaps with same lengths?

                cheers people!

It is tricmyto fit rs2 intercooler to stock ABY front. What parts did you change ? Welding the support bracket for rs2 cooler is one necessity but how did you do the rest when the place is very tight. (Option is not to use other crossmember pipe or AAN type inlet manifold position approach and have much more place for bigger cooler. That is too easy)

Did you also changa the air entry plastics for the oil cooler ?

That's a wrong statement that bigger intercooler would need a bigger turbo. Actually this is quite the opposite.
When chipping the std setup, intake temps will go skyhigh as the turbo is pushed on its limits. This is when a good ic is needed. When compressor capacity reatches a certain level (efficiency limit) the temps will go up without any significant increase in air flow.

i very much would like to test the effects of a bigger intercooler on a maxxed out K24 setup... will post results when I get that far!

Regarding the bigger IC, i think the point being made is that a bigger turbo is suited to a bigger IC due to the extra volume. Turbo lag will increase - though what's the volume difference of a bigger IC in relation to the entire intake system? I see Porrkis' point, and perhaps the slight increase in lag is worthwhile given the greater need for cooling...

That said, with the increase in flow rate from a bigger turbo surely the air will move through the IC faster (assuming it's at the same pressure) and therefore a bigger IC is neccesary to ensure the air is in the IC long enough to cool, hence Jamo's original point of needing a bigger IC for a bigger turbo is very true! I guess that means that nobody was wrong?

Btw optimal IC design is to maximise the amount of pipes and not to make them maximum length. So in S2 configuration the optimum would be if the IC ends would be top and bottom.
More pipes -> lower velocity of air -> more time to exhange heat and also less pressure drop
Less pipes -> higher air velocity -> less time for heat exhange and more pressure drop

Unfortunately the space is quite limited for this..
