Can anyone conferm the correct timing for a 913b coupe. When the engine was rebuilt I think it was set at TDC by the mechanic, and I have since been told it sold be 3 degrees BTDC. If this is correct, how would a 3 degree advance effect the runnig of the car.

Hi!
The ignition timing is determined by the motronic ecu and cannot be adjusted in the conventional sense. Thats why there are markings (scribed lines) on the distributor body and the hall sender wheel. Basically these should be aligned at TDC. The ecu then calculates timing from the position of the relative sensors.
In fact so critical is this alignment that Audi have a special tool specifically to do that job, Tool 3233.
As its a PITA to see with the inlet on, the best you can hope for to align the centre of the rotor arm with the line on the dizzy body.
Here is a pic of a dizzy where you can clearly see the alignment marks.Attached Files -
Hi/, Tming on the S2 is not conventional, see this thread:

Thanks for the information Twoqu, the distributor was set to TDC useing these marks when the engine was out of the car, so can I assume that the timing is ok,the engine starts fine, runs real smooth and quiet, Its just not pulling like it should ,I have done a leak test and fixed a few small leaks which improved things a bit but it still dos'nt pull any where near like my s6. so i'm just looking for any other possible causes.
Many thanks for your help. LOUComment
